Community college district to launch
workforce drone program
New certificate program to prep students for local, high-demand, high-pay jobs
Students will soon be able to attain a certificate in the high-demand and high-pay field of drone operations at the Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District.
The field is in great need of highly trained workers, and college and district leaders partnered with business professionals across the region to develop the free new program.
The free GCCCD program will include 105 hours of flight instruction and 75 hours of additional training in one of two tracks: cinematography or surveying and mapping. Students will be expected to pay for their pilot’s license exam with the Federal Aviation Administration (which costs $175) before moving on to one of the two tracks. Pass rates on the FAA exam for past students at Grossmont College have ranged from 86 percent to 91percent on the first try.
Under the drone operations program supported by the U.S. Department of Labor, 267 students received training. Of those, 90 percent were veterans – a priority group under the federal grant. All of the 267 former students have gone on to employment at companies such as Birds Eye Aerial Drones in Santee, Hitec Commercial Solutions in San Diego, Hollywood Drones in Palm Springs, and Planck Aerosystems in San Diego.

BAE Systems’ M-Code GPS receiver unveiled
at Joint Navigation Conference in San Diego
At the Joint Navigation Conference in San Diego, BAE Systems unveiled its newest advanced M-Code GPS receiver for guided weapons and other small applications, enabling precise geolocation and strike capabilities in highly contested battlespaces.
The Strategic Anti-jam Beamforming Receiver – M-Code (SABR-M) delivers accurate position, velocity, altitude, and timing data, as well as strong protection against GPS signal jamming and spoofing – critical capabilities for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), precision-guided munitions (PGMs), and missiles in threat environments.
SABR-M integrates receiver technology with advanced antenna electronics in a small, hardened package designed to meet challenging performance requirements, such as weapons applications. It is the most capable integrated anti-jam GPS receiver and the first integrated M-Code receiver available for weapon systems.
Ordinance restricting sale of flavored
tobacco in San Diego signed by mayor
San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria has signed an ordinance by City Councilmember Marni von Wilpert to regulate the sale of flavored tobacco in the City of San Diego. Three states, 335 local governments, including Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Jose, have adopted similar laws.
The ordinance, known as the Stop Adolescent Addiction to Flavored E-Cigarettes (SAAFE) Act, makes it unlawful for retailers within the City of San Diego to sell or distribute specified flavored tobacco products effective Jan. 1, 2023. This includes any tobacco product that emits a taste or smell other than that of tobacco – i.e., fruit, mint, candy, vanilla, dessert, alcoholic beverage, spice and menthol. The ordinance does not apply to the sale of shisha (as typically used in hookahs), premium cigars or loose-leaf tobacco.
A statewide measure to ban the sale of specified flavored tobacco products in California will go before the voters this November. Should the measure be unsuccessful, the city’s ordinance will still go into effect on Jan. 1, 2023.
