Airport Authority board certifies environmental
study for Terminal 1 Replacement Project
The San Diego County Regional Airport Authority Board of Directors has certified
the final environmental impact report for the replacement of the 53-year-old Terminal 1 at San Diego International Airport.
The new Terminal 1 would feature 30 gates (up from 19 in the current terminal) and represent a significant upgrade for passengers. It would offer more gate-area seating, restaurants and shops, as well as additional security checkpoints with more lanes and a host of energy-efficiency upgrades.
The Airport Development Plan would also include numerous roadway and transportation improvements to make it easier for everyone to access the airport. A proposed on-airport entry road would remove an estimated 45,000 cars per day from Harbor Drive. The plan also includes right-of-way for outbound lanes, when needed.
The Airport Authority has set aside space between the terminals for a transit station that could accommodate any regional transit system chosen by SANDAG and other regional planning agencies. In addition, the agency will launch an all-electric shuttle fleet that will carry transit riders to and from the Old Town Transit Center. This service is scheduled to start in mid-2020.
The goal is to break ground on the new terminal in 2021 and open the first phase (19 gates) in 2024.

A team of scientists and archaeological explorers relocated and documented the site of a Grumman TBF Avenger off Oahu, Hawaii 77 years after it was lost. The site is believed to be associated with three U.S. servicemen missing in action from World War II.
Members of Project Recover, private research vessel Petrel, and the Hawaii Undersea Research Laboratory (HURL) used state-of-the-art technology to image the deep-water site in unprecedented detail.
On October 11, 1942, three U.S. TBF-Avenger aircraft from squadron VT-3 collided during a training flight off Naval Air Station Kaneohe, now Marine Corps Base Hawaii. Two of the aircraft crashed into the water immediately at the time of the incident. All six crew members of these two aircraft were killed and remain missing in action. The crew of the third plane bailed out successfully and were rescued.
The site was first discovered in 1999 by researchers from the Hawaii Undersea Research Laboratory while conducting a deep-water biological survey. The largely intact aircraft was filmed by a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) as it passed by. A second site consisting of unidentifiable debris was also recorded 600 meters (2,000 feet) away. The aircraft site was briefly revisited in 2013 by the University of Hawaii’s Pisces V manned submersible during an unrelated project in the area.
“We’ve been hoping someone could fully document these sites for a longtime now,” said Steve Price, one of the HURL staff that accompanied the team in the field. “I’m grateful that Project Recover and the crew of the R/V Petrel could assist.”
Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego researchers led by Andrew Pietruszka, along with the crew of R/V Petrel, deployed modern oceanographic instruments in an attempt to relocate and document the aircraft.

USS Carl Vinson to shift homeport
to San Diego following maintenance
The U.S. Navy announced that the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson will administratively shift its homeport to San Diego on Aug. 1, 2020. The ship, which left San Diego in January 2019, will return after the completion of a docking-planned incremental availability at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, WA.
Carl Vinson, commissioned in 1982, completed its most recent deployment in April 2018.

Diplomacy Council co-hosts presentation by former
special presidential envoy on ‘Three Presidents at War’
Amid heightened U.S.-Iran tensions, San Diego Diplomacy Council (SDDC) is co-hosting a presentation by Brett McGurk, former special presidential envoy for the global coalition to defeat ISIS, who will discuss key U.S. foreign policy decisions related to the fight against terrorism since 9/11, on Thursday Jan. 16, at 5:30 p.m. at San Diego State University’s Parma Payne Goodall Alumni Center.
The seasoned diplomat who brokered and led the delicate coalition of partners in the global fight against ISIS, resigned from the high-profile post, becoming one of the latest member of the Trump administration to leave in protest at the president’s abrupt decision to withdraw U.S. troops from Syria.
Part of SDDC’s Talk-About Series, the presentation, titled “Three Presidents at War,” is co-hosted with the Charles W. Hostler Institute on World Affairs and the Center for Advancing Global Business at San Diego State University.
“Mr. McGurk will address the critical U.S. foreign policy decisions related to the fight against terrorism since 9/11 under the Bush, Obama and Trump administrations,” said Fabienne Perlov, executive director of the San Diego Diplomacy Council. “With the situation in the Mideast more turbulent than ever, this event is especially relevant and timely, and we expect to have a full house.”
The event will be moderated by Steve Kontos, a longtime foreign service officer who recently completed a nearly 30-year career with the U.S. Department of State and now works independently, specializing in defense and foreign policy issues.

PSAR to hold annual Legal Update
The Pacific Southwest Association of Realtors (PSAR) will host its annual “Legal Update” with Gov Hutchinson, assistant general counsel with the California Association of Realtors (CAR), from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Friday, Jan. 17, at PSAR’s East County Service Center, 1150 Broadway, El Cajon. ‘Committees and Cocktails’ event
The Pacific Southwest Association of Realtors (PSAR), a real estate trade group for San Diego-area Realtors, will present the inaugural “2020 Committees and Cocktails,” a free event from 3 to 6 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 22, at Buffalo Wild Wings, 1640 Camino del Rio North, in Mission Valley. This special opportunity will feature free information on PSAR committees from committee representatives.

pricing summit set for June 23-25
