honored as Builder of the Year
For the second time in four years Chelsea Investment Corp. has been honored as San Diego’s 2018 Builder of the Year by the leadership of the Building Industry Association of San Diego County (BIA).
Chelsea CEO Jim Schmid accepted the award during the recent 2018 ICON Awards ceremony.
The ICON Awards also honored Chelsea as its Builder of the Year in 2015, when the firm shared the honor with its in-house construction arm, Emmerson Construction.
Ranked as the nation’s 26th largest developer of affordable housing, Chelsea has completed over 100 affordable projects since its founding in 1984. Chelsea’s portfolio includes housing for families with special needs, as well as homes for low-income families, seniors, farm workers, veterans and the homeless.
Chelsea is now building the largest new affordable housing development in San Diego, a total of 306 apartments situated along Friars Road in the Civita master-planned community in Mission Valley.
“At a time of record-high housing costs, he [Jim Schmid] is our go-to leader on all matters relating to housing affordability and affordable housing,” said Rita Brandin, chairperson of the 2018 ICON Awards. “For years, he has been our bridge builder between our market rate and affordable housing interests. This is no small matter as the entire policy arena is now dominated by the subject of affordable housing.”
Other Chelsea projects currently underway include:
- Paseo La Paz, 137 units of affordable housing for low-income families across from a trolley station in San Ysidro, Calif.;
- Schmale Family Senior Residence, a 62-unit complex for low-income seniors in Ramona, Calif.;
- The Lofts at Normal Heights, offering 52 affordable apartments for homeless veterans in the city of San Diego;
Most recently, Chelsea has completed the following new affordable communities:
- Mesa Grande, 89 affordable rental homes serving low-income families, which replaced an outdated strip mall on Mission Gorge Road;
- Cesar Chavez Villas II, 80 units of affordable apartments for active and retired farmworkers in Coachella, Calif.;
- Villa Storia, 38 affordable rentals for low-income families in Oceanside, Calif.,
- Volta and Duetta, 210 new affordable apartments for low-income families and seniors in Chula Vista, Calif.

Ad Astra begins new cohort
with 3 life science startups
Three new life science startups — Cooler Heads, Hydrostasis and Vivid Genomics — began the second cohort of Ad Astra’s business accelerator program on Tuesday. Ad Astra provides founders with the building blocks to establish a strong business foundation as well as the tools necessary to succeed as a leader.
Each company received a $20,000 investment from Ad Astra, access to a global mentor base of seasoned investors and entrepreneurs, and connections to an accomplished community of women.
Ad Astra, which translates “to the stars” in Latin, was founded earlier this year by investors Vidya Dinamani, Allison Long Pettine, and Dr. Silvia Mah. The distinctive program combines a focus on business foundations along with a unique research-based curriculum specifically for female entrepreneurs.
Their secret sauce for female founders is key, as Long Pettine puts it, “Our proprietary framework enables our founders to become aware of unconscious biases, discover how they can uniquely combat these, and act on this knowledge leveraging the set of tools we’ve developed.”
Dinamani adds, “Our goal at the end of 12 weeks is to fully equip the founders to build investable companies and become strong leaders.”

New study shows effectiveness
of prostate cancer therapy
Many prostate cancer patients can be treated effectively using stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT), according to results from a national research study published online this month by the International Journal of Radiation Oncology*Biology*Physics.
The study also will be published in the October print edition of the journal, also known as the Red Journal, the official publication of the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO).
The trial represents the largest multi-institutional prospective study of SBRT to treat localized prostate cancer. Researchers at 21 medical centers, including Scripps Clinic, followed the clinical outcomes of 309 prostate cancer patients for five years after SBRT treatments. The observational study specifically followed low- and intermediate-risk patients, which comprise the majority of all prostate cancer patients in the U.S.

Viasat, Data Link Solutions get
contracts for Navy radio systems

The U.S. Navy has awarded separate contract modifications to Viasat and Data Link Solutions to continue support work on the service’s Multifunctional Information Distribution System Joint Tactical Radio Systems program.
Data Link Solutions, a joint venture between BAE Systems and Rockwell Collins , will conduct MIDS JTRS modernization efforts under a $386.9 million modification while ViaSat will perform upgrades for $96.2 million, the Defense Department said.
The modifications will raise the ceiling of the companies’ existing contracts, which were awarded in 2015, to $990 million for Data Link Solutions and $698.2 million for Viasat.
The contracts combine purchases for the Navy, U.S. Air Force, MIDS Program Office, governments of various foreign countries and all NATO nations under the Foreign Military Sales program. Both companies are scheduled to complete services under their latest awards by June 15, 2020.

USD alumna nominated as ambassador
to United Nations General Assembly
President Donald Trump has nominated distinguished USD alumna Margarita Paláu-Hernández, Esq. to the Seventy-third Session of the General Assembly of the United Nations.
Margarita “Maggie” Paláu-Hernández is founder and CEO of Hernández Ventures, a privately held enterprise involved in Spanish Media, real estate developments, and a variety of business ventures.
Ms. Paláu-Hernández graduated from USD in 1982, magna cum laude, with a bachelor’s degree in Spanish literature and business minor. Thereafter, she attended law school at UCLA School of Law and became a member of the California Bar. She returned to USD in 2007 to join the USD Board of Trustees. Currently, she serves as a trustee emeritus.
A resident of Pasadena, Paláu-Hernández is a dynamic higher education advocate. She has been active in developing and supporting youth programs which prepare high school Latino students for successful matriculation into private Catholic colleges and careers.
The mother of three is active in healthy living programs, and is a competitive cyclist and marathoner.

Emergency medicine research
on display at Oct. 1-3 meeting
Leading researchers in emergency medicine will present nearly 500 studies during the Research Forum at the annual meeting of the American College of Emergency Physicians at the San Diego Convention Center from Oct. 1-3. The Research Forum takes place on Oct. 1 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Oct. 2 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m; and on Oct. 3 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Experts will present their data on topics ranging from pediatrics to geriatrics, opioids, mental illness, diagnostic imaging, toxicology, cardiology and more. Many of the poster presentations will be featured in a special supplement to Annals of Emergency Medicine. The Research Forum will also feature special presentations located in Sails Pavilion each day.

Sycuan begins hiring
for over 700 new positions
Sycuan Casino said it is now hiring for over 700 new positions for its hotel and resort expansion. The variety of new positions are in the food and beverage, hotel and casino divisions.
Sycuan is kicking off its hiring efforts with a job fair today from 1 to 4 p.m. at the East County Career Center. Sycuan will host a series of job fairs through the remainder of this year and into 2019. Many of the job fairs hosted by Sycuan will have hiring managers on-site interviewing applicants and making on-the-spot job offers for specific departments. Those interested in attending the job fairs are encouraged to bring copies of their resume.

Tainá Armiche joins Transparent Mortgage
Transparent Mortgage, a San Diego-based mortgage broker and banker, announced the hiring of Tainá Armiche as team mortgage loan originator. In her new role, Armiche will be responsible for processing loans, assisting with pre-approvals and growing the company’s clientele while maintaining its high customer service standards of transparency and integrity.
Armiche also will handle inquiries from prospective clients, review loan scenarios, check guidelines, find the best mortgage options for customers, price out different loans and lock in mortgage rates.
Prior to Transparent Mortgage, Armiche worked as a senior loan officer for nearly three years at a local mortgage brokerage.
Originally from Brazil, Armiche graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business administration and management from Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul. She then moved to the United States and continued her education at University of California San Diego in the certificate program for business.

Fauntelle Carrillo Joins Cavignac & Associates
Cavignac & Associates, a management and insurance brokerage firm, has hired Fauntelle Carrillo as an account executive within its Personal Lines Department. In her new position, Carrillo is charged with maintaining existing client relationships; educating clients on preventative risk measures to protect their family members, themselves and their personal assets; and recommending appropriate levels of insurance coverage. She also is responsible for identifying and contacting new business prospects, obtaining the information needed for ratings and issuance of proposals, and developing new marketing strategies.
Carrillo has 10 years of experience in the risk management and insurance industry. Prior to joining Cavignac & Associates, she served as an account executive for SullivanCurtisMonroe Insurance Services in Irvine, where she was employed for five years. She served another five years as a senior underwriter for the AIG Private Client Group in San Diego.
A graduate of San Diego State University, Carrillo holds a Bachelor of Science degree in business management.
