San Diego Fleet Week Returns for 2 Weeks of Activities
Two weeks of festivities will mark this year’s Fleet Week celebration that begins in September and honors the men and women of the armed services.
The sponsoring San Diego Fleet Week Foundation has added a new free event — the Port of San Diego Fleet Week Big Bay Family Festival Sept. 18-19 at the B Street Cruise Terminal Downtown. The event will feature ship tours, military static displays, in-water demonstrations, live music, a beer garden and children’s fun zone.
Tentatively-scheduled ships available for tour are the USS Curts, USS Pinckney and the new high-tech littoral combat ship the USS Freedom.
“This festival is a wonderful opportunity for the San Diego community, in fact all of Southern California, to explore Navy ships up close and to interact with sailors, marines and coastguardsmen,” said Alexandra Squires, executive director of the San Diego Fleet Week Foundation.
The flagship event of the celebration is the Coronado Speed Festival, a full weekend of activities and family fun Sept. 25-26. Naval Air Station North Island throws its gates open to visitors to get a glimpse of a working U.S. Navy base. Coronado Speed Festival features auto races on a live U.S. Navy runway, flyovers, naval ship and air demonstrations and ship tours. Military admission and children ages 12 and under are free.

Qualcomm Inc. Honors Verizon Executive
Dick Lynch, chief technology officer of Verizon Communications, has become the first recipient of Qualcomm Inc.’s 25th anniversary Technology Innovation Partner Award Program. Qualcomm will make a financial donation in Lynch’s name to fund the advancement of wireless education.
“Since its founding, Qualcomm has consistently focused on innovation, entrepreneurship and collaboration,” said Irwin M. Jacobs, co-founder and former chairman and CEO of Qualcomm. “Over the next 12 months, Qualcomm will recognize certain individuals who exemplify these shared principles, have played a key role in the success of the wireless industry and have furthered adoption of Qualcomm technologies.” Jacobs said Lynch is being recognized for his long career of leadership in the evolution of mobile wireless, which he said is the largest technology platform in history.
Lynch has collaborated with Qualcomm to promote the proliferation of advanced mobile technologies. According to Qualcomm, his strong advocacy inspired several industry-leading wireless companies to adopt CDMA and other technology solutions and platforms pioneered by Qualcomm.
Grape Street Property Sold to Four Stars Enterprise
Four Stars Enterprise Inc. has purchased vacant property at 526 Grape St. in Downtown San Diego for $2.4 million. The 25,265-square-foot property has been entitled with a 22-unit townhome project. Four Stars is exploring the possibility of developing the property as it is entitled, possibly including other uses. The seller, Pradohaus LP, was represented by Robert Kerr and Josh Buchholz of NAI San Diego. Four Stars was represented by Sam Riazati and Neda Fathi of Great Source Realty.
Illumina Inc. Appoints VP of Corporate Development
Nicholas J. Naclerio has been appointed senior vice president of corporate development for Illumina Inc. He reports to Jay Flatley, president and CEO of the firm. Naclerio previously was co-founder and executive chairman of Quanterix and was executive chairman of True Materials and president and CEO of ParAllele BioScience. He’s held leadership positions in Motorola, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and the U.S. Air Force. He has served on a number of corporate and institutional boards, including the SNP Consortium. Naclerio holds a doctoral degree from the University of Maryland.
Toft Appointed President of Sanford Rose Associates-S.D.
Robin Toft has been named president of Sanford Rose Associates-San Diego, a new life sciences and health care-focused firm within the Sanford Rose Associates executive search network. Prior to establishing her own firm, Toft was managing director of Sanford Rose Associates-San Francisco, which focuses on executive recruitment for life sciences clients. Prior to her career in executive search, Toft was senior vice president of commercial operations for Hoffmann-La Roche Ltd., and held executive posts within biotech and health care companies. Sanford Rose Associates was founded by Sanford M. Rose in 1959. It is an executive search consulting firm with over 65 offices.
Air & Space Museum Opens New 3D/4D Theater
The San Diego Air & Space Museum has opened its new 3D/4D Zable Theater, which uses the newest 3D technologies and employs interactive seats and unique special effects built into the theater. The theater seats 36 guests per show, and they play continuously each day. The special exhibition is included with regular admission. Funding for the Zable Theater was provided by the Walter J. Zable and Betty C. Zable Foundation, Cubic Corp. and the San Diego Air & Space Technology Center.

The Museum also has opened a special play area for kids, the Kid’s Aviation Action Hangar with attractions for kids of all ages.
