every day. Whether a person goes to the movie theater, sporting event, theme park or plays video games in the comfort of their home, VR becomes something tangible and real in their lives. Now, the intricacies of VR and virtual environments (VE) are becoming a part of training, shipboard modernization, equipment installations and operational environments facing warfighters today.

Last year, the San Diego-based Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command (SPAWAR) formed the 3-D Ship Scanning Team to attack shipboard configuration management and to find new innovative techniques to further the SPAWAR mission of accelerating and streamlining delivery and installation of assets to the fleet and to reduce the cost of normal operations. Utilizing commercial off-the-shelf technology, the team took accurate 3-D representations of three operational ships scheduled for upcoming command, control, communication, computers and intelligence installations. The three ships included the amphibious transport dock ship USS San Diego, the guided-missile destroyer USS Truxtun and the amphibious transport dock ship USS Anchorage.
The SPAWAR “scanning team” received the 2016 Secretary of the Navy Innovation Award in the category of Automated Process Development in a prestigious ceremony officiated by Thomas Dee, performing the duties of the Under Secretary of the Navy, on June 5.

On World Oceans Day, 1100

Commitments Made to Protect the Sea

At a first-of-its-kind event devoted to the oceans at the United Nations headquarters in New York, countries, private organizations, states, provinces, and universities have been making commitments  to enhance the sustainability of the oceans.

Students and researchers from the University of California San Diego said on Thursday, June 8, World Oceans Day, that those pledges have inspired them to press on performing the science that helps understand the oceans and informing the policy that leads to protections – even if the United States is noticeably absent from the list of countries that have made such declarations.

The Ocean Conference, which concludes today, is the first convened to consider ocean protections as one of the 17 sustainable development goals identified by the U.N. in recent years. The goal pertaining to the oceans is identified by the moniker “SDG14” while others in the series consider poverty alleviation, gender equality, and other objectives. As with the landmark Paris Agreement from which the Trump Administration last week announced its withdrawal, the pledges made at the conference are nonbinding.

The UC San Diego delegates are traveling as representatives of the UC Revelle Program on Climate Science and Policy, the entity that represents the University of California system annually at the global climate-focused Conferences of the Parties, or COPs.

Millennium Medical Technologies

Receives Unique FDA Clearance

The Lipo-Loop system
The Lipo-Loop system

Millennium Medical Technologies has become the first in the nation to receive FDA clearance for a reusable fat collection and transfer system used in plastic or reconstructive surgery and regenerative aesthetics. The FDA clearance includes components used with the company’s liposuction and body shaping technology as well.

One of the challenges in the fields of plastic and reconstructive surgery has been in developing a completely closed system that harvests, prepares and transfers larger volumes of fat. To address this need, Millennium Medical Technologies, in collaboration with Steven R. Cohen, founder of FACES+, created “Lipo-Loop.” The Lipo-Loop system optimizes the fat grafting procedure from tumescence, to harvest, to processing, and delivery. It provides the surgeon with a simple, closed, sterile fat harvest and transfer system that is easy to use.

The system allows for very rapid sculpting of the human body with a combination of liposuction and fat grafting.

San Diego Places 9th Nationally

in the Top 25 U.S. Tech Cities

San Diego has placed ninth within the top 25 U.S. tech cities, with San Jose (Silicon Valley) and San Francisco capturing the first and second spots respectively, according to Cushman & Wakefield’s inaugural “Tech Cities 1.0” national report launched Thursday.
“The lower cost of real estate and housing, as well as our educated and tech-savvy Millennial workforce, make San Diego an affordable alternative compared to other major tech cities and a prime location for tech companies to expand or relocate,” said Jolanta Campion, Cushman & Wakefield’s Director of Research in San Diego. “With near-perfect year-round weather and an abundance of outdoor activities, San Diego is an attractive place to live, work, and play.”

The top 25 tech cities were determined by analyzing the concentration of factors such as talent, capital, and growth opportunity – the key ingredients that comprise a tech stew. The heartiest of these tech epicenters are: 1. San Jose, CA (Silicon Valley); 2. San Francisco, CA; 3. Washington, DC; 4. Boston/Cambridge, MA; and 5. Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill, NC.
