Demolition Today Prepares Downtown Site
for Manchester Pacific Gateway Project
The demolition of the historic Navy Broadway Complex, scheduled to start at 10 a.m. today, is the next step in the planned $1.3 billion redevelopment of the 12.07-acre Manchester Pacific Gateway project, in the works for nearly 11 years. Manchester Financial Group is the developer.

SDSU Students Launch Their
Entrepreneur Careers

The stereotypical internship nowadays is often portrayed as a collection of menial tasks such as grabbing coffee or filing papers. The Lavin Entrepreneurship Center at San Diego State University, on the other hand, aims to place students in internships and jobs where they gain useful skills that will benefit their careers.
The Lavin Center is hosting the LaunchIn Panel and Career Fair from 4-7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 26, in Montezuma Hall in the Conrad Prebys Aztec Student Union. The panel will feature three guest speakers, while the career fair will serve as a hiring event for entrepreneurial-minded students seeking internships.
“You can’t learn more from anybody than an entrepreneur or a growing business,” said Cyrus Mostashari, the director of the internship program at the Lavin Entrepreneurship Center.
Two of the guest speakers are recent alumni who have successfully started their careers with the help of the entrepreneurship programs offered at SDSU. Cody Barbo successfully launched the job-seeking site Industry, while Jeff Gordon (’02) created the app TapHunter, which helps customers find the bar that serves their favorite drink.
After the speakers’ presentations, attendees will have the opportunity to meet employers from local startups. These companies are looking for students who can make a difference in their company.

San Diego’s 78 Corridor: Primed for Growth
The technology cluster along the San Diego region’s 78 Corridor spans 70 different industries and 200 unique occupations. Encompassing the North County cities Carlsbad, Escondido, Oceanside, San Marcos and Vista, this diverse tech cluster is expected to grow by 5 percent over the next five years, according to a study released by Innovate78.
Study highlights include:
- The 78 Corridor’s tech cluster has a $6.1 billion total economic impact annually, representing nearly 25,000 jobs.
- North County’s technology cluster has a competitive advantage in precision manufacturing — specializing in the production of biomedical devices, telecommunications equipment and defense-related products.
- The 78 Corridor’s tech cluster is 1.4 times more concentrated than the nation.
- Biotech and biomed devices has been the fastest growing segment in the tech cluster, with a 9 percent increase in employment since 2011.

San Diego Jobless Remains at 4.2 Percent;
4,300 jobs gained
The San Diego Monthly Employment Report (February 2017 to March 2017) shows increases in the civilian labor force and employment, and no change in the unemployment rate.
“Jobs continue to grow this past year in the region. Overall, employers in San Diego County have added 29,600 jobs between March 2016 and 2017. Keep an eye on the hospitality and tourism industries, where we will see job growth in coming months,” said Phil Blair, executive officer of Manpower Staffing/San Diego.

Solana Beach BeachWalk Retail
Center Sold for $33.25 Million
BeachWalk, a 54,973-square-foot retail center in the city of Solana Beach, has been sold for $33.25 million to a fund manager based in Chicago. The seller was a partnership managed by The Muller Company, an Orange County-based real estate investment company.
Built in 1993, BeachWalk shopping center sits on a 3.06-acre site at 437 S. Highway 101.
Tenants include California Pizza Kitchen, Alfonso’s of La Jolla, Rubio’s Coastal Grill, and Banfield Pet Hospital.
CBRE represented the seller and buyer in the transaction.

H.G. Fenton Wins National Satisfaction
Award Again for its Multifamily Projects
For the 15th consecutive year, H.G. Fenton Company has received a National Resident Satisfaction Award from SatisFacts, a national provider of resident surveys focusing on multifamily retention and reputation management. H.G. Fenton was recognized for having among the highest resident satisfaction scores among companies with 2,000-4,999 units. More than 200 management companies representing 3,000 communities participated in this year’s surveys and awards.
H.G. Fenton owns and manages 14 residential communities throughout San Diego County. It has partnered with the Little Italy Association to bring a European-style pedestrian plaza to life along Date Street between India and Columbia streets. The gathering space will be known as Piazza della Famiglia.

Cubic Awarded $4.5M Contract
from Canadian Government
Cubic Global Defense has been awarded a contract worth $4.5 million from the Government of Canada to upgrade National Defence’s Data Communications Network (DCN) and Exercise Control Centre (EXCON) for the Canadian Weapons Effect Simulation system, in Wainwright, Alberta, Canada.
Under the contract, Cubic will upgrade hardware and software associated with the DCN and EXCON, including replacement of the existing network and hardware.
