Padres Announcer Jerry Coleman Dies
Longtime San Diego Padres baseball announcer Jerry Coleman, who as a player won four World Series rings with the New York Yankees, died Sunday at age 89, Padres officials announced. “The San Diego Padres are deeply saddened by the news today of the passing of Jerry Coleman. We send our heartfelt sympathy to the entire Coleman family, including his wife Maggie, his children and grandchildren,” a team statement said.
Coleman began his professional baseball career in 1942, as a New York Yankees minor leaguer and made his big league debut in 1949. He played nine seasons as a second baseman and played on six World Series clubs.
In 1950, after the Yankees swept the Phillies, Coleman was named an American League All-Star and World Series Most Valuable Player.
The La Jolla resident retired from professional baseball after the 1957 season with a lifetime .263 average, 16 home runs and a 217 RBI in 723 games.
He interrupted his professional baseball career twice to serve his country as a Marine pilot — once in World War II and again in the Korean War.
He earned two Distinguished Flying Crosses, 13 Air Medals and three Navy citations before retiring as a lieutenant colonel. He is the only major league player to see active combat in two wars.

Poll Workers Needed for Feb. 11 Special Election
Poll workers are needed for the Feb. 11 Special Consolidated Election, especially those who are bilingual in any of eight specific languages. The election consolidates the runoff for mayor of the city of San Diego and a special election for the city of Solana Beach. Voters in Solana Beach will decide on Proposition B, which would allow special use permits to be issued for the Fletcher Cove Community Center.
The Registrar’s office is required by federal law to provide bilingual speakers and voting materials to voters who speak Spanish, Filipino, Vietnamese and Chinese. A recent survey showed a need for speakers of Khmer, Japanese, Korean and Hindi at about 30 precincts so the Registrar’s office is also recruiting poll workers bilingual in those languages for the Feb. 11 election.
There will be eight polls in Solana Beach and 573 polls in the city of San Diego. All poll workers receive a stipend ranging from $75 to $175 depending on the assignment and those who are bilingual receive an additional $15 if they are assigned to provide language assistance to voters.

Cibus Global Ltd. Acquires Nucelis Inc.
San Diego-based Cibus Global Ltd. biotechnology firm focusing on development on non-transgenic crop traits, has acquired the remaining interest in Nucelis Inc. The announcement was made by Cibus CEO and President Keith Walker. Nucelis, which had been established as an independent entity in December 2010, will now become an independent operating unit of Cibus, which employs approximately 100 people worldwide, and also includes Cibus US LLC and Cibus Europe B.V. Nucelis CEO and President Sean O’Connor will continue to lead the Nucelis operating unit as its CEO and will join the Cibus executive management team as a senior vice president of Cibus. Nucelis will continue to be the exclusive licensee to Cibus’ Rapid Trait Development System technology in its key product areas of fermentation and bio-based chemicals.
County to Unveil Improved Mobile App
The county of San Diego today is scheduled to unveil an improved mobile emergency application, City News Service reports. County authorities said the upgraded app for Apple and Android mobile devices will have more features for emergency planning. Among other things, it will allow users to share disaster plans created in the app with family members and friends, and will send notifications when food, water and other items assembled for a home emergency kit expire. The county Office of Emergency Services is offering a free two-person camping tent donated by Target to the first 3,000 people to download the app and/or make a few other disaster preparations.

Coronado Gets New Representative on Port Board
Retired Rear Adm. Garry Bonelli is the newest member of the Port of San Diego Board of Commissioners, representing Coronado. Bonelli took the oath of office on Friday, and joins a panel that sets policy for San Diego Bay and the adjacent shoreline. The board’s seven members represent Chula Vista, Coronado, Imperial Beach, National City and San Diego.
Bonelli replaces retired Adm. Lou Smith, who decided not to seek re-appointment.
Bonelli’s 45-year Navy career, which ended last year, included active duty, the reserves and serving at the Navy’s Special Warfare Command in Coronado. — City News Service
Northrop Grumman and Navy Complete Nine
Flights of Triton Unmanned Aircraft System
Northrop Grumman Corp. and the U.S. Navy have completed nine initial flight tests of the Triton unmanned aircraft system, marking the half-way point in a process called envelope expansion. During envelope expansion, the test team validates the aircraft’s ability to operate at a range of altitudes, speeds and weights. The flights are taking place at the company’s manufacturing facility in Palmdale, Calif. “Completion of envelope expansion will allow the test team to prepare for installation and further testing of Triton’s surveillance sensors,” said Mike Mackey, Northrop Grumman’s Triton program director. The Triton test team accomplished endurance flights up to 9.4-hours at altitudes up to 50,000 feet. The aircraft also performed doublets, a maneuver that tests the aircraft’s ability to recover from small perturbations in its flight path caused by turbulence.
Triton carries a variety of intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance sensor payloads that allow military commanders to gather high-resolution imagery, use radar to detect targets, and provide airborne communications and information-sharing capabilities to military units across long distances.
The Navy plans to field 68 Triton UAS and will be used with the manned P-8 Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft to conduct surveillance missions.
Solatube International Promotes Michael Sather to Marketing Manager
VISTA — Solatube International Inc. has promoted Michael Sather to commercial marketing manager. One of Sather’s projects, Operation Textbook, is an education initiative involving product donations to help K-12 schools and higher education institutions. He has worked for Solatube International the past 14 years, starting in customer service and working in commercial sales for 12 years. Previously, Sather worked as a marketing guru for Liston Concepts in Salt Lake City. He received a bachelor’s degree in marketing from Arizona State University.
