Palomar Health’s Borrowing Has Ruffled Feathers at Sharp HealthCare

Amid ongoing financial decline, Palomar Health has borrowed cash from two other hospital systems since 2024. But one of those loans has ruffled some feathers.

Sharp Healthcare has threatened to file a lawsuit against Palomar Health for allegedly breaching an exclusivity arrangement the two hospital systems established last year. The threat of litigation comes after Palomar recently accepted a loan from UC San Diego Health.

Palomar Health, a public healthcare system that operates Palomar Medical Centers in Escondido and Poway, recently borrowed $20 million from UC San Diego Health. Palomar’s board of directors approved the loan at a March 7 board meeting.

Why It Matters: Why Hotel Room Taxes Are Going Up

The city of San Diego is going to raise hotel room taxes in May. The money was supposed to fund an expansion to the Convention Center, but that isn’t happening anymore.

Anyone staying in a hotel in San Diego will soon see a higher tax on their bills.

The tax ranges depending on how close to downtown you are, from 11.75% to 13.75%. So for example, if you’re staying in a downtown hotel and your room costs $250 a night, you’d see an extra $34 a night on your bill.

This is all because in March 2020, voters supported Measure C by a wide margin.

2025 San Diego County Fair Now Hiring 1,200+ Temporary Workers for Summer Run

The 22nd District Agricultural Association has begun its massive annual hiring effort to help produce the region’s biggest and longest-running community celebration, the 2025 San Diego County Fair.

Over the next few months, the District will hire more than 1,200 temporary workers for the Fair. All temporary jobs can be found on the San Diego County Fair’s website at sdfair.com/jobs.

The wide range of jobs includes cashiers, customer care team players, gate attendants, traffic controllers, public safety associates, stagehands, and more. The Fair features both indoor and outdoor positions. For every job, the District seeks candidates who embody its FAIRS values, which stands for Fun, A+ Quality, Integrity, Respect, and Service.

“Each year, our goal is to build a team that helps San Diego to start the summer in the most fun and exciting way possible,” says Carlene Moore, the CEO of the District, which produces the Fair and owns and operates the Del Mar Fairgrounds. “We want people who want to work hard, have a lot of fun, and allow generations of San Diegans create cherished memories by providing unforgettable experiences in a festive atmosphere.”
