Lennar now selling new-home collections at Junipers,
San Diego’s resort-style community for those 55-plus
Lennar, one of the nation’s leading homebuilders, is now selling at three home collections within Junipers, a masterplanned community for active adults in San Diego. Historic seaside mansion in La Jolla listed by Berkshire

Greg Noonan and Patrick Noonan of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties recently listed an extraordinary La Jolla mansion with commanding ocean views and historical significance. Millions of Californians weigh options after
losing an affordable internet subsidy

A federal affordable internet subsidy is going away and 3 million Californians must decide whether to end access largely considered a human right. Alfredo Camacho and his three daughters started a new routine last week: Every evening they go to the parking lot outside a nearby library to get Wi-Fi access. The kids do homework and download YouTube videos, while Alfredo checks his email and searches job listings.
Camacho and his daughters ages 9, 12, and 15 live in Guadalupe, a town of roughly 9,000 on the Central Coast of California. They used to rely on the Affordable Connectivity Program, a $30 to $75 monthly credit for high-speed internet, but that ends this month.
“This takes away grocery money,” he told CalMatters. “Being a single father, $30 goes a long way.”
Camacho is one of roughly three million Californians deciding whether to keep home internet access or give it up and deepen the digital divide.
Congress allocated $14.2 billion to the Affordable Connectivity Program in 2021, when the COVID-19 pandemic was still top of mind and underscored people’s need for online access to do school and work. But since Congress failed to allocate more funding, that money runs out later this month. And since the subsidy only covers part of the bill, the onus is on subsidy recipients to cut the cord or it could end up costing them money.

San Diego Community College District names Daniel
Troy as vice chancellor of finance and business services
The San Diego Community College District named Daniel Troy, who has held several high-level positions managing fiscal operations at the state and local levels, as its next next vice chancellor of finance and business services. Troy’s first day as executive business officer with the region’s largest provider of higher education and workforce training will be June 28.
Troy comes to the SDCCD, which includes San Diego City, Mesa, Miramar, and Continuing Education colleges, from the San Luis Obispo County Community College District’s Cuesta College, where he has served as assistant superintendent/vice president of administrative services since April 2016. Prior to Cuesta College, Troy was employed as vice chancellor for College Finance and Facilities Planning within the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office.
A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., Troy has a master’s degree in public policy from Georgetown University and a bachelor’s degree in English from Dickinson College.

San Diego’s sports arena is historic
San Diego International Sports Arena, the imposing concrete venue in the Midway District and the longtime home of the San Diego Gulls, is worthy of special recognition ahead of its expected demolition. San Diego’s Historical Resources Board voted unanimously, with Chair Tim Hutter recused, to designate the 58-year-old sports arena as a historic resource.
The action, which does not prohibit demolition, officially recognizes the arena in three areas: its role in remaking the Midway District into a commercial hub after World War II, its association with a local sports legend and its New Formalism architectural style. The property will be added to the local register of designated historical resources.

Mexico seafood chain opens first U.S. restaurant in La Jolla
Mexico-based seafood chain La Corriente Cocina del Pacifico, with several locations south of the border, has opened its first U.S. restaurant at 456 Pearl St. in La Jolla. La Correiente recently took over the space that previously housed Las Morelianas for three years. Originally launched in 2014 in Tijuana as La Corriente Cevichería + Nais, the upscale mariscos concept now has branches in Mexicali, Monterrey, Mazatlan, and Mexico City. Feeding San Diego receives grant from the Vertex Foundation
Feeding San Diego, the county’s leading hunger-relief and food rescue organization, has been awarded a grant from the Vertex Foundation to support the School Pantry Program. The Foundation has been a Feeding San Diego supporter since 2020 and has donated consistently to support the critical hunger-relief programs operated by Feeding San Diego, the only Feeding America partner food bank in the region. The School Pantry Program is the non-profit’s largest hunger-relief program addressing childhood food insecurity.
San Diego Public Library erasing past due debts
The San Diego Public Library is removing barriers to library access with the new Fresh Start program. The program offers one-time fine forgiveness for patrons whose juvenile accounts have been suspended for unreturned items, allowing them full access to library programs and services. Fresh Start will erase any past debts owed by SDPL library card holders under the age of 18 and lift suspensions on those accounts. There are currently more than 2,770 people under the age of 18 whose SDPL accounts have been suspended because they did not return items.
