Where are the top U.S. Senate
candidates raising their cash?

By Yue Stella Yu and Jeremia Kimelman | CalMatters

In northwest Los Angeles, a 15-square-mile enclavesits at the foot of the Santa Monica Mountains. Tucked between Bel Air and the ridges, the neighborhood is where nature, art and wealth concentrate: It boasts both the Getty Museum and the Skirball Cultural Center.

It is also home to the most generous donors in California’s 2024 U.S. Senate race.

Welcome to zip code 90049 — an area in Brentwood churning out more campaign cash for Senate candidates this year than any other California zip code, according to a CalMatters analysis of itemized federal campaign finance data for individual donors who have contributed more than $200 this year.

As of Sept. 30, more than 170 donors who live there had collectively contributed roughly $300,000 to U.S. Senate candidates, with $283,000 — 97 percent — going to three prominent Democrats: U.S. Reps. Barbara Lee of Oakland, Katie Porter of Irvine and Adam Schiff of Burbank.

Fletcher Family property in Del Mar sets

record for most expensive home sold in county

By Brook Binkowski | Times of San Diego

A San Diego beachfront home has sold for a record-breaking $44.1 million, making it the most expensive home ever sold in the county.

It’s also a piece of local history with ties that stretch back into Old Hollywood.

The $44.1 million buys a property with a guesthouse, a detached apartment, a tennis court and a swimming pool, eight bedrooms and seven and a half bathrooms on slightly more than an acre of land.

The ranch-style Del Mar property at 2940 Sandy Lane was built by Hollywood real estate developer C.E. Toberman, also known as “Mr. Hollywood,” founder of Graman’s Chinese Theatre and the Hollywood Bowl, among other properties.

He was also the maternal grandfather of Charles “Kim” Fletcher, who lived at the home for several years. Fletcher’s paternal grandfather, Col. Ed Fletcher, served as a director of the 1915 and 1935 Expositions in Balboa Park.

County asks organizations to host

sleeping cabins as emergency shelter

The County’s Health and Human Services Agency is seeking partner organizations as it looks to purchase and place sleeping cabins. These cabins will expand emergency housing options for unsheltered San Diegans. The Department of Homeless Solutions and Equitable Communities will open grant applications Nov. 1 for private organizations to purchase the cabins directly from a pre-approved vendor.

Development of the $1.5 million sleeping cabin program was approved last year by the San Diego County Board of Supervisors as part of ongoing efforts to expand shelter options for individuals and families in need.

About 100 Pallet Shelter cabins will be made available to organizations through this program. Each cabin sleeps one to two people.  The cabins have storage space, a locking door and charging outlets. They are light and sturdy structures that can be quickly set up.

Organizations interested should email HSEC-OHS.HHSA@sdcounty.ca.gov to sign up for the informational webinar and/or receive an application packet.
