Study says San Diego’s cyber security talent
grows by 10 percent across 1,000 firms

The Cyber Center of Excellence and EDC unveiled the fifth economic impact report on cybersecurity in San Diego, analyzing the rapidly growing $4 billion cluster with more than 13,000 jobs in 1,000 establishments.

Launched with a cross-section of leaders across defense, aerospace, higher education, health care, and technology, the report explores the firms, technology, and talent working to help thwart cyber risk across San Diego and beyond.

The region’s talent pool has grown by nearly 10 percent since 2018, five times faster than all other occupations combined.

The report says local cybersecurity firms remain deeply linked to the federal government, including ther Department of Defense. A majority (65 percent) of San Diego cyber firms work directly or indirectly with the government.

Demand for cyber talent far exceeds local supply, according to the report. Three out of four cybersecurity firms in San Diego report having difficulty finding entry- to mid-level as well as experienced applicants. Increasing compensation and diversity can help address San Diego’s talent shortage.

NASA is launching a mission to visit a strange metal asteroid

Digital Trends

NASA is preparing to launch a mission to visit one of the more unusual bodies in the solar system: an asteroid that is thought to be made almost entirely of metal. The Psyche asteroid, approximately 140 miles in diameter, is thought to be unique among asteroids due to its composition of iron and nickel, unlike the typical rock and smaller amounts of metal that these bodies are usually made of.

NASA’s spacecraft, also called Psyche, is set to launch Thursday, Oct. 12, and will travel 2.2 billion miles to reach the asteroid in its orbit between Mars and Jupiter. The journey will take around six years, and once the spacecraft arrives in 2029 it will spend 26 months orbiting the asteroid and studying it with its imaging, spectrometer, and magnetometer instruments.
