SDSU researchers working to protect power
grids against natural disasters and cyberattacks
By Taylor De Leon | SDSU
Under a $1.5 million federal grant, San Diego State University researchers are developing ways to protect the current power system from the effects of natural disasters and cyberattacks that leave people and utility companies vulnerable to data breaches and widespread blackouts.
Their work aims to help utilities withstand events that carry the threat of pervasive power outages at a time when energy systems need to be redesigned to accommodate the growing use of renewable energy sources.
Assistant Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering Tong Huang and Distinguished Professor Chris Mi received a grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) ASCENT (Addressing Systems Challenges through Engineering Teams) program to further their research.

California hit zero emission truck
sales goal two years ahead of schedule
Gov. Gavin Newsom announced that California surpassed its zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) truck sales goal two years ahead of schedule. The goal – 6 percent of new trucks sold in California to be ZEV by 2024 – was exceeded by 1.5 percent in 2022, with 7,639 ZEV trucks sold.
While trucks represent only 6 percent of the vehicles on California’s roads, they account for over 35 percent of the state’s transportation-generated emissions of the poisonous, smog-causing gas nitrogen oxide, and a quarter of the state’s on-road greenhouse gas emissions.
Earlier this year, California surpassed its passenger vehicle ZEV goal two years ahead of schedule – more than 1.5 million ZEV sales two years before the 2025 goal.
