Visualizing the Top U.S. States for AI Jobs
By Marcus Lu. Grapics Design, Joyce Ma
Much ink has been spilled over fears that artificial intelligence (AI) will eliminate jobs in the economy. While some of those fears may be well-founded, red-hot interest in AI innovation is creating new jobs as well.
This graphic visualizes data from Lightcast, a labor market analytics firm, which shows how many AI-related jobs were posted in each state throughout 2022.
In total there were 795,624 AI jobs posted throughout the year, of which 469,925 (59 percent) were in the top 10. The full tally is included in the table below.
We can see that California quickly became the primary destination for AI jobs in the early 2010s, presumably as Silicon Valley companies began developing the technology.
California’s share has since declined, with a significant number of jobs seemingly moving to Texas. In fact, many tech companies are relocating to Texas to avoid California’s relatively higher taxes and cost of living.

Key facts from the report include the following:

• California received a total of $5.4 billion in research funding from the National Institute of Health (NIH) in 2022.
• Life science organizations in California expanded employment by 6.0 percent in 2022, outpacing all other industries in California (4.2 percent) as well as the U.S. overall (3.5 percent).
• In 2022, the state’s life science industry expanded direct employment by more than 26,600 jobs.
Illumina appeals FTC’s order to divest Grail
GenomeWeb
Illumina is attacking the U.S. Federal Trade Commission’s constitutionality as part of its appeal to overturn the agency’s order to divest cancer testing firm Grail.
In their petitioner’s brief, filed Monday in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, Illumina and Grail called the FTC’s decision “a case of flagrant government overreach” and argued that “the FTC proceeding, from start to finish, was tainted by fundamental constitutional defects, each of which renders that proceeding unconstitutional and requires the Commission’s decision be set aside.”
“Sometimes the price of an unconstitutional agency can be measured in lost dollars. This time, the price is lost lives. This court should reverse the Commission’s decision and render judgment for Illumina and Grail, clearing the way for them to continue their life-saving work together,” Illumina said.
