High school students get their hands on 40
white seabass in unique science program

San Clemente High School will become the 12th school to participate in the “Seabass in the Classroom” program with the delivery of 40 juvenile white seabass on April 11 by representatives of Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute (HSWRI) and partner organization Get Inspired directed by Nancy Caruso.

Students in the International Baccalaureate Marine Science Course will raise the white seabass for two months before releasing them into Dana Point Harbor. Nancy Caruso has been working with the students in preparation for their delivery. They will feed the fish, monitor water quality in the recirculating-system tank and clean the tank daily. In addition, Caruso will be teaching the students about aquaculture practices worldwide, as well as career opportunities and the benefits of this form of food production.

“Seabass in the Classroom” was established by Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute in 2011 as a complement to the Ocean Resources and Enhancement Program. (OREHP) Since then, students at 11 schools have completed 124 grow-out cycles and released more than 3,100 fish into local waters off Southern California.

OREHP was designed to help replenish the formerly depleted wild stock of white seabass and is operated in conjunction with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Since its inception at HSWRI’s hatchery in Carlsbad in 1983, scientists have raised and released more than 2.7 million white seabass. Hatchery fish have been caught up to 20 years later and a recent genetics-based study affirmed the program’s significant contribution to wild stocks.
