Visualizing the Highest-Paid Athletes in 2021

Visual Capitalist

The financial figures in sport are enormous. The highest-paid athletes in the world make tens of millions, or even hundreds of millions per year.

The global pandemic put a significant dent in the commercial aspect of many sports. Even though the teams and their owners earned significantly less during this period, individual athletes actually thrived.

According to the Forbes annual rankings of the world’s highest-paid athletes for 2021, the top 50 of them turned in a record-setting year and made nearly $2.8 billion in 12 months, beating 2019’s record total by more than $150 million.

This year’s list had a multitude of names making the big bucks. Here are two:

Connor McGregor is 2021’s highest-paid athlete

MMA fighter Connor McGregor tops the list with a whopping $180 million earned in 2021. According to McGregor, this has been a long time coming, who in 2016 infamously boasted to soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo that he’d overtake him one day as sports’ highest-paid star.

Roger Federer lands at the 7th spot

Roger Federer’s on-field earnings for 2021 were a mere $0.03 million, but he still lands in the 7th spot. Recovering from a knee injury, Roger Federer made nearly all of his $90 million in earnings from sponsorships.

Early construction activities underway for new
Student Services Building at MiraCosta College

Grading and other early-phase construction activities are underway for the future new Student Services Building at MiraCosta College. The expansive, state-of-the-art facility will consolidate student services functions scattered throughout the campus to a single, one-stop-shop comprising more than 39,000 square feet.

Located at the former Pedley Park site, the new building is strategically located as a gateway building for the campus, providing a much-needed sense of entry and easy wayfinding for new or prospective students.

The building will also provide a new home for MiraCosta’s Veterans Center, providing academic counseling, career services, a food pantry, free tutoring, assistance to military veterans with processing paperwork, getting coursework certified for GI Bill benefits, and more.

The Veterans Center will also benefit from $1.5 million in state funding awarded to help equip and furnish a lounge and resource area in the center, among other enhancements.

Swinerton and the DLR Group serve as the design-build partnership leading the project, expected to be complete in fall 2023.

County permit refunds provide more
pandemic assistance to restaurants

The county has begun notifying restaurants of $4.5 million in permit fee refunds for the period of March 16, 2020 through June 15, 2021. This amount is in addition to $118.9 million already provided to restaurants by the San Diego County Board of Supervisors to help offset the impact of California’s stay-at-home and local public health orders.
“Restaurant owners and their employees suffered significant losses because of COVID-19. As the industry rebuilds, this refund will aid restaurants in their economic recovery and is in addition to the tens of millions of dollars provided to them during the height of the pandemic,” said Nathan Fletcher, chair of the San Diego County Board of Supervisors. The County of San Diego is committed to supporting the region’s ongoing economic recovery and is working with stakeholders to find different ways to support the business community.”

Oceanside to receive $3.5 million for new
fire station close to Camp Pendleton

Oceanside will get a $3.5 million federal grant to help build the city’s new downtown fire station because of the location’s proximity to Camp Pendleton. The relocated firehouse on Civic Center Drive will replace the original Fire Station No. 1, built in 1929 on Pier View Way.
Located just 2.3 miles from the main entrance to the Marine Corps base, the city’s Fire Station No. 1 could be called to help extinguish a large fire on the military installation. The new Oceanside site allows a bigger station with more room for firefighters and their equipment, including a ladder truck to protect the six- and seven-stories buildings that are new to downtown Oceanside.  The construction project is expected to go out for bids later this year.
