Professor Joely Proudfit appointed to
Commission on the Status of Women and Girls
Cal State San Marcos professor Joely Proudfit has been appointed by California Gov. Gavin Newsom to the Commission on the Status of Women and Girls. Established as a state agency in 1965, the commission identifies and works to eliminate inequities in state laws, practices and conditions that affects California’s women and girls.
Proudfit was appointed to the commission on June 25, and her four-year term begins immediately. She joins 13 other commissioners in the body and is one of only two from San Diego County.
Proudfit, who has served as chair of American Indian studies and director of the California Indian Culture and Sovereignty Center at CSUSM since 2008, said she is excited to bring to the commission an increased awareness of issues impacting Native women and girls, such as health and wellness, media representation, Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW), economic security, and educational equity.
In addition to her academic work at CSUSM, Proudfit is the founder of two companies: Naqmayam Communications (NaqCom), a public relations agency that acts as a liaison between American Indian and non-American Indian organizations and agencies; and Native Media Strategies, which provides resources that help foster more authentic representation of Native American and indigenous peoples in Hollywood.
Women’s Venture Summit returns Sept. 17-18

Kaiser Permanente and Tri-City Medical Center
announce partnership to expand services
Kaiser Permanente San Diego and Tri-City Medical Center announced a growing partnership to deliver expanded service for North County families seeking health care.
With the new agreement, Tri-City Medical Center becomes a Plan Hospital for Kaiser Permanente, enabling Kaiser Permanente members to access care at Tri-City Medical Center. Services provided include inpatient hospital care, emergency department access, surgical services, and specialty procedures for Kaiser Permanente members in North County and surrounding communities.
Kaiser Permanente San Diego currently operates the San Diego Medical Center and Zion Medical Center in central San Diego; and offers outpatient care at 26 medical offices and target clinics throughout San Diego County – including eight in North County.
Hines acquires Activity Business Center
Activity Business Center, a five-building multi-tenant industrial development in the Miramar area of San Diego, has been acquired by Hines, the international real estate firm. The seller was BKM Capital Partners.
Spanning nine acres, Activity Business Center consists of five 1- and 2-story buildings at 9235-9265 Activity Road and 9520-9530 Padgett St. The buildings feature expansive windows for abundant light, clear heights ranging from 10 to 20 feet, and exceptional flexibility to accommodate a variety of users.
Approximately 90 percent were leased at the time of sale.

Mayer Hall recognized for historical
contributions to physics
The American Physical Society has designated UC San Diego’s Mayer Hall as a historic site in recognition of research conducted by physicists Walter Kohn and Lu Jeu Sham on density functional theory.
Their development of the “Kohn-Sham equation” inside Mayer Hall became the foundation for the computation of the material properties of electrons and nuclei.
Understanding the electronic properties of complex systems is essential to the design and engineering of new materials and drugs. Kohn and Pierre Hohenberg on sabbatical in Paris developed a theorem for the electron ground state energy to depend on the electron density distribution instead of the usual potential energy due to the nuclei.

Sorrento Therapeutics, U.S. Navy to
deploy COVID-19 tests and treatments
Biotech firm Sorrento Therapeutics and a U.S. Navy research lab have embarked on a five-year collaboration to test new coronavirus treatments and tests. The partnership gives U.S. Naval Medical Research access to Sorrento’s COVID-19 tests and therapies, which the Navy will use to monitor and treat cases at its field sites in Liberia, Djibouti, Egypt, and Ghana.
Infinium Spirits relocates corporate
headquarters to Downtown San Diego
Infinium Spirits, formerly headquartered in Orange County, has relocated its corporate headquarters to the hear of San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter. Berger Montague relocates San Diego
office to 401 B St. in Downtown
Berger Montague’s San Diego office has moved to Downtown San Diego at 401 B St., Suite 2000. Associate Sophia Rios will continue managing the firm’s San Diego office.
The irm’s San Diego office opened in July 2019 with an initial focus on bolstering its securities litigation practice. That focus quickly expanded to include antitrust and consumer protection litigation as well, necessitating a more convenient space in Downtown.

Kratos developing hypersonic flight
experiment test vehicle in Maryland
San Diego-based Kratos Defense & Security Solutions Inc. announced that its Defense & Rocket Support Services Division has received a contract from the Navy Surface Warfare Center Port Hueneme Division, White Sands Detachment to develop a hypersonic, experimental test vehicle to perform flight tests for the maturation of high-speed flight technology for missile defense and hypersonics research.
Kratos DRSS is a leading provider of products and solutions in support of ballistic missile targets, hypersonic systems, sub-orbital research, sounding rockets, directed energy and laser program systems. Work under this contract will be performed at a secure Kratos facility in Glen Burnie and other vendor locations, bringing new jobs to Maryland.
