Northrop Grumman developing advanced

communications system prototype for Air Force

Northrop Grumman Corporation’s  plant in San Diego is rapidly working on developing and fielding a gatewayONE prototype, an open system enabling translation and communication across platforms, in support of the Advanced Battle Management family of Systems.

Under the contract, awarded by the U.S. Air Force Life Cycle Management Center’s C3I & Networks Directorate, Northrop Grumman is providing engineering, management and technical assistance for the Air Force’s integration of net-centric 5th-to-5th generation aircraft communications capabilities and other platforms into a modular, open-architecture gateway.

Testing of a flight-representative configuration will be conducted in a systems integration laboratory, on the ground, and in the air based on the four-month operational demonstration pace envisioned by the Air Force Acquisition Lead, Dr. Will Roper and the Department of the Air Force Chief Architect, Preston Dunlap.

Work performed under this program will directly support live demonstrations of the Air Force’s developing Advanced Battle Management family of Systems. This capability could be used to network together the types of aircraft being developed through the Air Force’s Low-Cost Attritable Aircraft Technology initiative.

Mapped: The State of Press Freedom Around the World

View a more detailed version of the above map by clicking here

In many Western countries, it’s easy to take press freedom for granted.

Instances of fake news, clickbait, and hyper-partisan reporting are points of consternation in the modern media landscape, and can sometimes overshadow the greater good that unrestricted journalism provides to society.

Of course, the ability to do that important work can vary significantly around the world. Being an investigative journalist in Sweden comes with a very different set of circumstances and considerations than doing the same thing in a country such as Saudi Arabia or Venezuela.

Today’s map highlights the results of the 2020 Global Press Freedom Index, produced by Reporters Without Borders. The report looks at press freedom in 180 countries and territories.

Gary & Mary West Senior Dental Center seeks

donations to pay for oral hygiene kits for seniors

With seniors sheltering in place and potentially doing so for many more months to come, the Gary & Mary West Senior Dental Center wants to make sure vulnerable San Diego seniors have the items they need to keep up their health and oral hygiene.
The organization is in the process of preparing 5,000 Home Care Oral Hygiene Kits for vulnerable seniors in San Diego County. Each kit will contain much needed dental and health care items to help seniors maintain their oral and overall health.

Examples include a reusable tote bag, toothpaste, toothbrush, mouth rinse, dental floss, soap, hand sanitizer, toilet paper, paper towels, and oral health educational materials for seniors. The kits will be delivered via Serving Seniors home delivered meal service. The distribution has begun and will continue to as long as the kits are available.
The Gary & Mary West Senior Dental Center is asking the community to help by donating money that would be used to purchase the kits. A $5 donation will provide one kit to a senior. A gift of $50 will deliver 10 home care kits. The Gary and Mary West Foundation will match donations up to a total of $10,000.

and donate sanitizer in response to pandemic

More than a dozen member distilleries of the San Diego Distillers Guild are switching operations to produce large quantities of hand sanitizer in lieu of artisanal spirits. As produced, Guild member distilleries have and continue to supply thousands of gallons to first responders and those on the frontline, while distributing free and low-cost hand sanitizer to the public during a time when demand for the product has risen exponentially.

To date, Guild members have produced and then donated or sold more than 10,000 gallons of sanitizer to agencies and organizations such as the city of San Diego, United States Postal Service, UPS, the US Navy (including the USS Portland, USS Pearl Harbor, and USS Independence), the city of Los Angeles, and Amazon, as well as most  local police and fire departments, banks and credit unions, grocery stores, hospice and health care workers, and civic organizations locally and as far away as Texas and Hawaii.

$3 million grant aims to  bolster math, science

teaching in San Diego County schools

San Diego State University has received a $3 million National Science Foundation-funded grant to strengthen mathematics and science teaching in high-need, urban schools throughout San Diego County.
Starting in May, SDSU will recruit 20 teachers from the Grossmont, La Mesa-Spring Valley, Santee and Sweetwater school districts to serve as Noyce Master Teaching Fellows (MTFs). Over the course of five years working both at SDSU and at their school sites, fellows will hone their skills as teachers of math and science, provide professional development for colleagues, serve as guide teachers for SDSU student teachers and teach university courses in math and science education.
“This grant will help us grow leaders who will help other teachers,” said Lisa Lamb, Qualcomm Endowed Professor of Mathematics Education in the School of Teacher Education. “There are thousands of teachers and hundreds of thousands of students in the San Diego region, so the more time we spend cultivating that leadership base, the greater the impact that we can have in the region.”
