Maravai LifeSciences to celebrate grand
opening of its $40 million new headquarters
Maravai LifeSciences will hold a grand opening of its new headquarters in Sorrento Valley on Wednesday, a $40 million, 105,000-square-foot campus that features a 50,000-square-foot pharmaceutical-quality manufacturing facility with five state-of-the-art cleanrooms for TriLink BioTechnologies. Maravai was founded in 2014 and acquired TriLink in 2016.
Maravai’s investment creates five new manufacturing suites that meet the FDA’s Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) requirements for TriLink, which can help TriLink increase production of complex materials like messenger RNA (mRNA). mRNA is on track to replace biologics as the fastest growing segment of the drug industry and has the potential to treat almost any disease, according to Maravai. With its increased cGMP capacity, TriLink can help its global customers bring their biomedical breakthroughs based on mRNA and other modified nucleic acids through clinical trials faster and accelerate improvements in human health care, the company said.

Jonathan Segal FAIA wins California AIA
Design Award for Park and Polk project
Jonathan Segal FAIA has received a State of California AIA Design Award for it Park and Polk mixed-use multi-family housing project located between the neighborhoods of Hillcrest and University Heights.
According to Segal, the building site sat unoccupied as a fenced dirt lot for nearly 10 years until the firm acquired the land. Park & Polk features 43 residential lofts for rent, four low-income affordable units, seven office studios, and ground floor retail spaces. On the rooftop, residents can enjoy a large outdoor common area including a BBQ, olive trees, and expansive views of the city.
The building was designed in the shape of an “H”, allowing light to flood into the units from many angles and creating exterior views for its residents. The cube form of the building was made by connecting the “H” legs to each other using bridges spanning nearly 80 feet.
The hallways all have natural ventilation and lighting and the building’s core power usage is fully offset by a large solar panels on the rooftop. On the north side, a massive above-ground planter is dedicated to natural drought tolerant grasses and an olive tree that filters all water that comes into contact with the site.

SDSU Mission Valley project receives
Mobility Certification from Circulate San Diego
The nonprofit think tank Circulate San Diego awarded its Mobility Certification to SDSU Mission Valley, a transit-oriented and sustainable plan proposed for Mission Valley. The Mobility Certification is a program to recognize and support transit-oriented, smart growth proposals in the San Diego region.
SDSU Mission Valley will include 4,600 homes and incorporate walking and bicycling infrastructure. The plans include a 1.9 mile hike and bike loop that circles the campus, 1.5 miles of dedicated bike lanes, and a new trolley plaza. Transportation demand management strategies are incorporated into the plan, including unbundled parking for all residences, a transit pass program for employees working on site, and showers and lockers in employment areas.
The entire SDSU Mission Valley site is located within a half mile of the Green Line Stadium Station, which connects to the existing San Diego State University campus in 8 minutes.

Francis Parker School named a
top STEM school by Newsweek
Francis Parker School has been ranked among the top STEM schools in the country, according to Newsweek’s “Top STEM High Schools 2020” report released earlier this month. The School landed at No. 195 out of 500 schools listed and grabbed the highest spot among independent schools in San Diego.
The State of California had 82 schools ranked on the list, including top-ranked Standford Online High School.

Johanna Schiavoni to lead San Diego
County Bar Association in 2020
Johanna Schiavoni, an appellate attorney and founder of her own boutique appellate firm, Law Office of Johanna S. Schiavoni, will serve as president of the San Diego County Bar Association (SDCBA) for 2020.
In her practice, Schiavoni handles high-stakes civil appeals in federal and state courts covering a broad spectrum of legal areas, ranging from employment law to contractual disputes, business torts, and class actions. She also represents indigent criminal litigants when appointed by a court, routinely litigating complex criminal and constitutional law issues.
Schiavoni co-founded the San Diego Leadership Alliance, now in its 11th year of running a leadership institute; she served as the 2013/2014 president of Lawyers Club of San Diego; and, since March 2018, she has served as a mayoral appointee on the board of the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority.
Renee Stackhouse has been elected to succeed Schiavoni as the Bar’s 2021 president and will serve as President-Elect in 2020. Current SDCBA President Lilys McCoy will serve as Immediate Past President in 2020.
Additionally, Samantha Begovich, Roxanne J. Carter, Warren K. Den, and Kimberly Swierenga have been elected by the SDCBA’s membership to serve three-year terms on the Board.
Installation is Dec. 13 at The Guild Hotel in Downtown San Diego.
