Small businesses and startups in California will be hurt the most by the longest government shutdown in U.S. history, with over 700,000 jobs at risk, according to a new ValuePenguin.com study.  The government shutdown, currently in its 26th day, has put a hold on all Small Business Administration (SBA) activities, including the processing of SBA 7(a) loans, a key source of funding for thousands of small businesses and startups in California.

SBA approved 59,907 SBA 7(a) loans for Californian small businesses and startups since 2010, amounting to $29.46 billion in funding and the creation of 712,538 jobs — the highest in the country.

Nationally, the Small Business Administration has issued over $177 billion in funding, by approving 472,000 7(a) loans since 2010. These loans have led to the creation of over five million jobs across the country.

With zero SBA loans being processed at the moment, the backlog of companies waiting for SBA funding is growing — and could take months to clear in the aftermath of the shutdown — hurting small businesses for far longer than anticipated.

The top 10 states most affected by the government shutdown, in terms of SBA loans, are, in descending order: California, Texas, New York, Florida, Ohio, Illinois, Michigan, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Minnesota.

Sea slug study illuminates how mitochondria move within cells

Your cells have an amazing ability—they can build their own energy factories, called mitochondria. Once built, mitochondria must move where needed in the cell. Defects in mitochondrial transport are a suspected cause of diseases including Alzheimer’s, ALS, Huntington’s and Parkinson’s.

Scientists at Scripps Research have discovered how neurons manage this important process by studying cells from Aplysia californica, a type of sea slug used in neuroscience research.

The paper, published this week as the cover story in the journal Cell Reports, may help open the door to new therapies to improve mitochondrial transport, says neuroscientist Sathyanarayanan Puthanveettil, an associate professor at Scripps Research and senior author of the new study.
