Dr. Karen Haynes announces retirement
as president of Cal State San Marcos
Dr. Karen Haynes announced Tuesday that she will retire as president of California State University San Marcos at the end of June 2019. The announcement was made via a personal email from Haynes to the campus community. Haynes is the longest-seated president in the CSU system – the first woman to hold this role in history.
“As CSUSM approaches the close of its first major philanthropic campaign, and given its strong position as a forward-focused institution, it seemed to be an appropriate time for First Gentleman Jim Mickelson and me to consider our future. After much reflection, I have decided to retire as President of Cal State San Marcos – and Jim as founding director of [CSUSM’s] ACE Scholars Services— effective June 30, 2019.”
Haynes arrived at the university in February 2004. At the time, the university was 14 years old with a student population of over 7,000 and an alumni base of 13,000. Under her leadership, the campus has flourished to a student body of 17,000, with 45,000 alumni. She has overseen the addition of 15 new buildings, not including the university’s Extended Learning Building, which will open in the fall of 2019 through a one-of-a-kind public-private partnership. In 2008, CSUSM at Temecula, an off-campus center serving Southwest Riverside County, opened. Over 100 new academic programs have launched during her tenure, including CSUSM’s first engineering program in 2018. Additionally, Haynes championed the growth of Cougar athletics, including a transition to NCAA Division II. In 2015, Haynes publicly launched the university’s first major philanthropic campaign, Forward Together, an effort to raise $50 million, which will conclude on Dec. 31, 2018.
A first-generation college student, Haynes holds a Doctorate in Social Work from the University of Texas in Austin and a Master’s in Social Work from McGill University in Montreal. She began her career in academic administration in 1985 as the Dean of the Graduate School of Social Work at the University of Houston. In 1995, when she became the president of the University of Houston-Victoria, following a brief tenure as interim president, she was the first university leader in the nation with an academic background in social work. In 2004, following the departure of CSUSM’s second president, Dr. Alexander Gonzalez, she became CSUSM’s first woman president.
Since joining the California State University system, Haynes has lent her voice and support to several organizations and has led numerous committees. Her roles have included Founding President of the CSU Institute for Palliative Care, Chair of the CSU Commission on the Extended University, Chair of the CSU Program for Education and Research in Biotechnology, Presidential Sponsor for the American Council on Education’s Southern California Network of Women in Higher Education, and Board member of the San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation.
Haynes has been widely recognized for her leadership and service by civic, non-profit, governmental, educational and professional organizations. In 2017, she received the Social Work Pioneer Award by the National Association of Social Workers. In 2015, she received the Woman of the Year Award from San Diego Magazine, the President of the Year Award from the California State Student Association, and a Cool Woman Award from the San Diego Girl Scouts. In 2014, Social Work Degree Guide named Haynes the third-most-influential social worker in the United States.
She is the author of A Dream and A Plan: a Woman’s Path to Leadership in Human Services, and co-author, with Jim Mickelson, of the landmark textbook Affecting Change: Social Workers in the Political Arena.

San Diego Businesses: Tariffs will
damage one of every 4 local industries
More view tariffs as bad for the national economy than good
The San Diego County Business Forecast sponsored by CalPrivate Bank shows confidence within the business community continues. The Business Outlook Index (BOI) comes in at a solid 19.7, with improved expectations for hiring. This month’s Forecast also assesses the effect tariffs will have on business. Many local companies report concern over tariffs’ impact on the national economy, with the greatest concern about their own industry.
Statement from San Diego Regional Chamber: “For every company in our survey that anticipates the tariffs having a positive effect, there are 6.5 who predict the opposite, and this concern is warranted,” said Jerry Sanders, president and CEO of the San Diego Regional Chamber. “The San Diego region is especially vulnerable because of our highly developed integrated supply chains. Even those whose jobs are not directly linked to an affected industry should be concerned. Taxing imports is a tax on U.S. customers, because those costs are passed along to the buyer.”
For the second consecutive month, government regulations top the list of new challenging issues. Several businesspeople shared their concerns about the government’s “new tax laws” and recently imposed “tariffs,” with one person specifically citing “Trump’s import tariffs policy.” Others are focused broadly on “more regulations,” while one businessperson listed “more compliance, regulations, and technology,” as his primary concern.

Renovation of Rancho Vista
Corporate Center completed
The redevelopment of Rancho Vista Corporate Center at 16399 West Bernardo Drive in San Diego has been completed. The developer was Swift Real Estate Partners and the general contractor for the project was Level 10 Construction. Ware Malcomb provided architecture, interior design and branding services for the project.
The project included the renovation of the exteriors, with upgraded landscape and hardscape throughout, as well as upgrading and adding a host of on-site amenities for tenants. The corporate campus now includes a remodeled conference center, courtyard and 15,600-square-foot café with an operable glass wall system, as well as a new indoor workout facility, activity center with basketball and volleyball courts, outdoor collaboration areas and an outdoor dining area with a stretched fabric canopy. Ware Malcomb’s Branding Studio provided signage design services for the project.

More businesses turning to
Artificial Intelligence
Small and mid-sized companies are beginning to turn to Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies to stay competitive. According to a recent survey by Vistage, 57.6 percent of small-midsized business CEOs believe advanced technologies will impact their businesses in the next year, with 29.5 percent of those indicating that AI will be one of the technologies that has the most impact.
Similarly to larger enterprises, small companies are exploring how AI can help predict customer behavior, automate rote tasks, personalize customer experiences, improve go-to-market strategies, manage supply chains and more.
Specifically, Vistage’s survey of SMB CEOs found:
• 73.2 percent plan to invest in business software or apps in the next year.
• 57.6 percent believe advanced technologies will impact their business in the next year.
• 29.5 percent of those believe AI will have a great impact on their businesses in the next year.
• 13.6 percent say they’re currently using some form of AI in their businesses, primarily for business operations and customer engagement.

SDG&E energizes new transmission line to improve reliability
A new 15-mile electric transmission line built in north-central San Diego to enhance overall reliability for San Diego County’s 3.6 million residents has been energized, San Diego Gas & Electric announced Tuesday. Construction on the 230-kilovolt Sycamore to Peñasquitos transmission line began in early 2017 to ensure long-term reliability and support the growing energy needs of the region.
The new transmission line effectively acts as a highway. Adding a new pathway to the regional power grid creates an additional means for energy to reach customers while enhancing reliability in communities including Mira Mesa, Scripps Ranch and the city of Poway. On a grander scale, this additional transmission line helps alleviate traffic locally so energy can reach other parts of the region quicker – leading to improved reliability on a state-wide level.

Pardee Homes receives BIA awards for Lake Ridge community
Pardee Homes’ Lake Ridge community received two of the San Diego Building Industry Association’s Icon Awards for Best Architectural Design and Best Interior Design. The ninth annual BIA Icon Awards, showcases and celebrates the local building industry’s most distinguished accomplishments from the past year, as well as projects that significantly contributed to the enhancement of the local industry.
Lake Ridge Plan 3, designed by Pardee Homes and Robert Hidey Architects, was recognized for Best Architectural Design – Single Family Home, Under 4,000 Square Feet.
A second award was presented to Lake Ridge Plan 3 for Best Interior Design – Single Family Home, Under $1 million, designed by Pardee Homes and Ami Samuel Interiors.

Blue Sky Network acquires
Applied Satellite Engineering
San Diego-based Blue Sky Network (BSN), a provider of satellite tracking, data and communication solutions, has acquired Applied Satellite Engineering (ASE), a leading designer and manufacturer of advanced satellite communication equipment.
“We are excited to join forces with ASE and bring on their impressive portfolio of SATCOM products,” said Gregoire Demory, BSN president. “Our combined offerings will now give our customers even more options with solutions for maritime, land, machine-to-machine, push-to-talk, and anti-piracy applications.”
Both BSN and ASE have been Iridium value added manufacturers since 2004 and said it will continue to develop innovative products and services leveraging Certus, the advanced new multi-service platform powered by the Iridium NEXT constellation.

Tariq Hassan joins Petco
Petco has appointed global marketing leader Tariq Hassan as chief marketing officer. Hassan is based at the company’s National Support center in San Diego. Hassan brings more than 20 years of global marketing experience in brand strategy, digital and performance marketing, communications, innovation and insights. He served in global marketing roles and progressed through advertising assignments where he worked with notable brands including Pepsi, Gatorade, Frito Lay, Coors, Mars, Emirates, Cadillac, Mercedes-Benz, Johnson & Johnson and Visa.
Prior to joining Petco, Hassan served as senior vice president, global brand strategy and head of marketing, for wealth management at Bank of America Merrill Lynch. Previously, he held senior marketing roles at Hewlett-Packard and Omnicom. He currently sits on the global board of directors of Education for Employment, an NGO empowering marginalized youth across the Middle East and North Africa through vocational training and job placement.
Hassan holds an honors bachelor’s degree in international political science and philosophy from the University of Western Ontario and a master’s degree in integrated marketing communications from Northwestern University.

Karen Goldstein named vice president
of practice management and training
Broker dealers CUSO Financial Services L.P. and Sorrento Pacific Financial LLC have added Karen Goldstein as vice president of practice management and training. Goldstein oversees practice management consulting, offering wealth management best practices and comprehensive growth strategies to assist advisers, sales assistants, and program managers in differentiating their practices, developing business plans, achieving goals, and creating success in daily practice activities.
Goldstein leads teams in developing and delivering training content to field and back office employees. She also leverages a variety of educational methods—including on-demand videos, instructor-led live webinars, and regional educational events—to ensure foundational knowledge and coaching options for nearly a thousand users. She draws on 20 years of experience in the financial services industry and a strong background in working at large independent broker-dealers, managing advisor training, back-office employee training and business consulting.
Goldstein previously served as vice president of training and then vice president of the Business Consulting Group at First Allied Securities. She was previously with LPL Financial as a training manager.

Tommy Thompson named CEO
of North SD County Association of Realtors
The North San Diego County Association of Realtors (NSDCAR) has named Tommy Thompson as chief executive officer. Thompson succeeds Richard D’Ascoli, who had served since 2016 as CEO, as well as CEO of the 2,600-member Pacific Southwest Association of Realtors (PSAR). D’Ascoli will remain CEO of PSAR.
Thompson has extensive background in the real estate industry, association management and government affairs. Prior to joining NSDCAR, Thompson spent five years in executive leadership for the California Apartment Association, leaving CAA as senior vice president. He also served for nearly seven years as director of government affairs for the Building Industry Association of Southern California, and spent time working for the California state Legislature.
Thompson holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Utah. He grew up Fallbrook and currently resides in Oceanside.
