Biomed Realty and UC San Diego to Develop

Global Center for Oncology Research

Biomed Realty and UC San Diego are partnering to develop a new global center for oncology research “to tackle cancer’s biggest challenges.”

The Center for Novel Therapeutics will be a state-of-the-art research complex on the UCSD campus.

The project will be home to university and local research organizations focused on finding critical treatments and potential cures for cancer and other chronic diseases. This new building will be centered in the university’s Science Research Park adjacent to Moores Cancer Center at UC San Diego Health.

Construction on the development will start in the second quarter of 2017 and to be completed in early 2019.

“The Center for Novel Therapeutics is a unique example of an academic-industry collaboration that will bring brilliant minds together to collaborate on groundbreaking research,” said Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla. “This is an exciting new addition to the University’s Science Research Park — where a diverse array of researchers from every sector can advance technology and medical science to benefit patients.”

The new 110,000 square foot research hub will leverage the strength of the university’s doctors and research at Moores Cancer Center with private sector companies looking to translate research into helping patients throughout the world. UC San Diego will be the anchor tenant at the Center for Novel Therapeutics.

“By partnering with UC San Diego on the first university-linked accelerator, this project will give researchers and entrepreneurs unique access to academic and institutional resources at the University and Moores Cancer Center and the ability to be part of one of the nation’s most vibrant life science communities.” said Tim Schoen, CEO of BioMed Realty.

a Year for Road Repairs and Transit

After a week of fierce debate between opposing interests, the state Legislature on Thursday approved a plan to raise gas taxes and vehicle fees by $5.2 billion a year to pay for the repair of California’s pothole-ridden, decaying system of roads, highways and bridges.

The bill squeaked through the Senate on a 27-11 vote and cleared the Assembly with 54 votes, the bare minimum required in both houses.

Contract to Develop Graph Analytics Software

ExecutiveBiz

Northrop Grumman has won a $7.2 million contract from the U.S. Air Force to develop a widely-applicable streaming and static parallel-graph processing software.

The Defense Department said Northrop will identify and create static and streaming graph analytics to address five types of problem areas, anomaly detection, domain specific search, dependency mapping, N-x contingency analysis and causal modeling of events.

The project aims to explore new applications for graph analytics that have been discontinued in previous research due to processing, power or size challenges, DoD added.

Work will occur at Linthicum Heights, Maryland, through Oct. 5, 2021.

The Air Force Research Laboratory received 32 bids for the cost-plus-fixed-fee contract and obligated $631,043 at the time of award from fiscal 2017 research, development, test and evaluation funds.

Blindsgalore, a women-owned company selling custom window coverings, blinds and shades, has announced a continuous partnership with San Diego Habitat for Humanity, an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International. As part of the partnership, Blindsgalore supplies San Diego Habitat for Humanity with donations of customer-returned blinds and shades on an ongoing basis and provided window coverings for a new home being renovated in San Diego.

Thus far, Blindsgalore’s donations have helped many local families better their homes.

Curb Pollution: Trade in Your Old Lawn Mower

The 18th annual ‘Mowing Down Pollution’ Trade-In Event

County residents can roll their old, gasoline powered lawn mowers and other gas-fueled gardening equipment down to Qualcomm Stadium on Saturday, May13, and come away with new, zero-emission models for $99.99 each, which includes tax.

Available on a first-come, first-serve basis at the 18th annual “Mowing Down Pollution” Trade-In Event will be 500 new mowers and, for the second year, three other pieces of rechargeable garden equipment that can be exchanged for their gasoline-powered counterparts: a chainsaw, hedge trimmer and string trimer. Priced at $99.99 each last year, the new garden equipment will now cost $79.99 with each exchange. The new mowers are priced at $99.99 with each exchange, a deep discount from the $399 everyday retail price. The discounting is paid for through air pollution fines.

“Since 2000, we have distributed 8,434 rechargeable mowers, removing more than 80,000 pounds of pollutants from our air each year,” said Supervisor Ron Roberts, who started the mower exchange. “I encourage everyone with a gasoline model to come down and join us.”

Switching from gasoline powered garden equipment to rechargeable electric tools is a  way individuals can support the fight to reduce pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.
