San Diego Cannibas Conference & Expo

Set for Aug. 6-7 in the Convention Center

With one or more marijuana legalization initiatives on the California ballot in the November general election, the San Diego Cannabis Conference & Expo comes at an opportune time.

The conference, presented by Lets Educate A Future and WEEDMAPS, will be staged Aug. 6 and 7 at the San Diego Convention Center and will be open to the public.

It will feature former NFL players from the Gridiron Cannabis Coalition, a legal panel with information about federal and state legislation, a power women of cannabis panel, educational and networking workshops, and more than 150 floor exhibitors.

The groundbreaking event offers Californians the opportunity to learn more about the industry, laws affecting them and how the cannabis industry is evolving in their state, according to promoters. WEEDMAPS is a service that maps out local marijuana dispensaries in states across the globe.

The conference will be held from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, and is expected to draw thousands of attendees from across the country.

Tickets go on sale April 20. Tickets are $50 per day and available online and at the door. Attendees who pre-register by July 5, will receive a $25 per day discount.

“San Diego provides a perfect waterfront venue for individuals from across the country who want to combine their summer vacations with cannabis business and education opportunities. This is the first time a large scale cannabis conference has taken place in the city and town officials have welcomed us with open arms,” said Lets Educate A Future  Inc. CEO Rory Mendoza.

EMMES Realty Advisors Acquires

Downtown Parking and Retail Building

EMMES Realty Advisors LLC has acquired an eight-story, 580-stall parking and retail building at 1350 Sixth Ave. in Downtown San Diego and plans to upgrade the property and rename it “6th & A Parking.”

“The property is well located and will make an excellent addition to our 1.45 million square foot office portfolio by allowing us to offer additional parking to our valued customers,” said Jordan Johnson, vice president of EMMES Realty Services of California LLC.

Built in 1991, 6th & A Parking is located on the northwest corner of 6th Avenue and A Street, one block from EMMES’ 701 B Street office tower and three blocks from its 707 Broadway office tower.

Current ground floor retail tenants include Hertz Rental Car, Domino’s Pizza, a hair salon, a convenience store and other local retail services and restaurants. Planned improvements to the property and operations include a new on-site parking manager, repainting the exterior of the building, rebranding with new signage, improving exterior and interior lighting, modernizing the elevators and various security enhancements.

DBR Construction Selected to Build Two

New Projects at Palomar Medical Center

DPR Construction has been selected to build two new projects at Palomar Medical Center in Escondido valued at $200,000 each.

The company will retrofit the existing Labor and Delivery floor and add a neonatal intensive-care unit to the same floor. Both projects encompass infrastructure improvements and general construction management services. Construction is scheduled for completion in the fall of 2016.

Designed by CO Architects and dubbed the “hospital of the future” for its many cutting-edge features, the 740,000-square-foot, 11-story Palomar Medical Center accommodates up to 360 patient beds, 12 operating rooms, a 50-room trauma center, a 60,000 square foot undulating green roof and a 40,000-square-foot central plan, among other features.

 

National University and Scripps Health

Physicians Group to Help Students Find Internships

National University is joining with a Scripps Health-affiliated physicians group to make it easier for students studying health care administration and public health to land internships from among hundreds of local physician groups.

National University and Scripps Mercy Physician Partners have created a new online resource connecting more than 650 physician member practices with graduate students in National University’s Master of Healthcare Administration, Master of Public Health, Master of Health Analytics, and Master of Health Informatics programs. Physicians who are experts in 29 medical specialties can use the Internship Portal — on the Scripps Mercy Physician Partners’ Physician Resource Center website — to easily find interns looking for practical experience.

“We are committed to offering our students a range of opportunities to gain valuable work skills in the health care sector that enhance their academic studies,” said Dr. Gloria McNeal, dean of the School of Health and Human Services. “We are pleased to be partnering with Scripps Mercy Physician Partners to offer this valuable service that connects our students with physician groups dedicated to supporting a new generation of health care practitioners.”

Illumina, MolecularMD

 Agree to Collaborate

GenomeWeb

MolecularMD said it has entered into an agreement with Illumina that establishes a framework for potential collaboration on next-generation sequencing-based companion diagnostics.

The companies did not disclose details of the agreement, but said that it would combine Illumina’s NGS technology with MolecularMD’s experience developing companion diagnostics and submitting products for U.S. Food and Drug Administration clearance, with the goal of developing tests to support biopharmaceutical drug development programs.

MolecularMD opened its diagnostic laboratory in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 2012 and provides NGS solutions to support oncology clinical trials.

 

MiraCosta College to Open

Veterans Business Outreach Center 

MiraCosta College has been awarded a grant from the U.S. Small Business Administration to host a Veteran Business Outreach Center or VBOC. The center will open on July 5. The center will serve veterans and their spouses in Santa Barbara, Ventura, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego and Imperial Counties.

The new VBOC  located at the MiraCosta College facility at 2075 Las Palmas Drive in Carlsbad will help veteran business owners get certified to bid on government contracts, offer counseling and one-on-one assistance in developing business plans, financial forecasts and marketing plans; and help veterans get small business loans.

It will operate from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday thru Friday with evening appointments available by request. All services at the VBOC will be provided at no costs to the client.

The VBOC opening will be held at 9:30 a.m. at MiraCosta College. Ruben Garcia of the San Diego District Office of the SBA, will represent the U.S. Small Business Administration and Charlie Ng, vice president of business and administrative services, will represent MiraCosta College.

 

Downsized One Paseo Project

A downsized One Paseo project, the Carmel Valley development that was stalled by a signature-gathering campaign last year, was approved Monday by the San Diego City Council.

The mixed-use development will go on an empty 23.6-acre lot south of Del Mar Heights Road, between El Camino Real and High Bluff Drive.

Developer Kilroy Realty said the new design will attract nearly half the daily vehicle trips of the original plan, increase setbacks from main roads and improve landscaping. The plan incorporates 608 housing units, 280,000 square feet of office space and 96,000 square feet of retail.

The City Council approved the original, much larger project last year, but it was overturned after opponents collected 60,000 petition signatures. Council members subsequently urged Kilroy and opponents to reach a compromise.

Company officials detailed numerous workshops and other public outreach efforts to the community, leading to the updated design.

 

Cal State San Marcos Announces

New School of Education Director

Patricia Stall, a California State University San Marcos faculty member since 2003, has been appointed director of CSUSM’s School of Education.

Stall is a professor of secondary literacy in the School of Education. She teaches in the Single Subject Credential Program and mentors doctoral and master’s graduate students. Her research and publications involve student and leadership issues surrounding second language learners, American Indian students, at-risk students and teacher preparation.

Before her appointment, Stall coordinated the Single Subject Credential Program and served as the interim associate dean during the restructuring of academic programs at the university. In service to the university, Stall was appointed to the American Indian Task Force, most recently engaging in the strategic planning of the new department of American Indian Studies. She has been a senator and served on several Senate Committees, including chairing the Budget and Long Range Planning Committee and co-chairing the Long Range Academic Master Planning Committee.

After 40 years together, the principals of the  San Diego law firm of Kirby Noonan Lance & Hoge are splitting into five separate firms — Kirby & Kirby LLP, Noonan Lance Boyer & Banach LLP, Hoge Law Firm, The Law Office of Steven W. Sanchez and The Law Office of Christopher T. Wright.

The separation allows each firm to pursue their current practice areas in their preferred locations. Some of the firms will continue to work together on cases, as applicable.

These areas of expertise will continue in each of the new firms:

• Kirby & Kirby LLP will be located at 501 W. Broadway, across the street from the downtown courthouse. The firm is led by Michael L. Kirby and Jason M. Kirby, who have been partners together at KNL&H for almost a decade. The Kirbys and associate attorney Heather W.
