Kyoto Symposium to Honor
‘Father of Computer Graphics’
Dr. Ivan Sutherland, considered the “father of computer graphics,” will be honored as the Kyoto Laureate in advanced technology at this year’s Kyoto Prize Symposium March 13 at San Diego State University. One of the university’s signature events, the symposium honors individuals with outstanding lifetime achievement. Each year, the symposium features lectures by Kyoto Prize Laureates and esteemed scholars in the Laureates’ fields including business, government, independent peacemaking organizations, and academic institutions and societies.
Sutherland is recognized for developing Sketchpad in 1963, a graphical interface program that allowed the user to directly manipulate figures on a screen through a pointing device. Sketchpad’s interactive interface was years ahead of its time, and today’s computer-aided design systems are just one example of how this innovation has contributed to the field. His pioneering work laid the foundation for the graphical user interface in devices ranging from smartphones to computer workstations, supporting such applications as digital animation, 3-D modeling and virtual reality.
The symposium will be held Wednesday, March 13, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. in the Parma Payne Goodall Alumni Center. It is free and open to the public. (Reported by Natalia Van Stralen, SDSU NewsCenter)
Burnham, Jacobs and Rady Headline
17th Annual Real Estate Conference
San Diego entrepreneurs Malin Burnham, Irwin Jacobs and Ernest Rady will offer their views on San Diego’s long-term prospects for incomes, job creation and real estate at the March 8 Burnham-Moores Center for Real Estate’s annual real estate conference from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront hotel in Downtown. The conference also will feature: Doug Duncan, Fannie Mae senior vice president, who will analyze demographic changes that will impact single and multi-family real estate and lending; Asieh Mansour, head of Research-Americas, Global Research and Consulting at CBRE, will discuss commercial real estate trends and debt and equity market prospects; and Gregory Horowitt, author of “The Rainforest,” will present research on why government-related economic development policies and programs need transformational change to foster entrepreneurial activities, generate job and income growth and start-up companies.

Two Industrial Buildings in Vista
Sold for a Combined $14.8 Million
Engineer Business Center at 1390 Engineer St. in Vista has been sold for $4.63 million and a manufacturing building at 2611 Business Park Drive, also in Vista, has sold for $10.15 million. Child’s Family Investment Co. and the Gardner Family Trust purchased the Engineer Center from the seller, the U.S. Small Business Administration. The building consists of 8,200 square feet of office space and 2,300 square feet of HVAC production area.
The Business Park Drive building was purchased by SR Commercial from the Hallam Trust. E-World Recycling has signed a lease for the entire Engineer Business Center for 60 months at a value of more than $1.7 million. The manufacturing business is leased to Jacuzzi through the fourth quarter of this year. The property was built in 1999 and the buyer intends to make exterior and interior improvements. Cushman & Wakefield announced the sales.
Taxpayers Association CEO
To Take the Helm of the Equinox Center
Lani Lutar, president and CEO of the San Diego County Taxpayers Association, will oversee the Equinox Center as its new executive director beginning on March 18. The center describes itself as a “non-partisan think tank that focuses its efforts on engaging, informing and inspiring the public around solutions that protect our environment, promote a strong economy and enhance quality of life.” Lutar headed the taxpayers association for seven years. Along with water policy development, Lutar will be tasked with growing Equinox Center’s membership base and the organization’s Leaders 2020 civic engagement program, strengthening the financials and increasing the not for profit’s visibility.
Amaya La Jolla to Open March 18
With Executive Chef Camron Woods
Amaya La Jolla, located at 1205 Prospect St. in La Jolla, is scheduled to open on March 18. Designed as a sister restaurant to Amaya at The Grand Del Mar, it will offer a similar contemporary American menu featuring some of the favorite dishes of Executive Chef Camron Woods. Woods will be replaced at Amaya at The Grand Del Mar by Matthew Sramek, who has worked with Woods for the past three years. Amaya La Jolla will offer dinner daily for up to 118 guests in its dining room. Live entertainment will play nightly, including performances by a three-piece ensemble on the weekends. The bar lounge accommodates 66 people. It will serve handcrafted cocktails, wine selections and offer a light fare bar menu. A private dining room and wine cellar room are available for private party entertaining. Woods’ most popular Amaya dishes are Smoked King Salmon with Parsnip Purée, Brussels Sprouts, Bacon, Apple Chutney and Grain Mustard and Slow Roasted Pork Chop with Sweet Potato Bread Pudding and Roasted Apples.
Laura Buckley Elevated to Partner

Laura Buckley has moved from associate to partner in the San Diego law firm Higgs Fletcher & Mack. Buckley joined the firm in 2009 and practices in all areas of federal and state taxation. Buckley represents individuals and businesses before the Internal Revenue Service and the state taxing agencies in the United States Tax Court and other federal and state forums. Prior to joining Higgs, Buckley was an IRS chief counsel attorney and a special assistant United States Attorney where she represented the Internal Revenue Service in tax and bankruptcy matters.
Association of Community Managers Elects
Three from San Diego to Board of Directors
Melinda S. Young, senior vice president of Walters Management in San Diego, was elected chair of the board of directors for the California Association of Community Managers based in Laguna Hills. Cherié McColley with CM Consulting in Chula Vista and William Stewart with Merit Property Management Inc./Santaluz Maintenance Association in San Diego also were elected to the board. The board establishes and oversees the association’s California programs and policies and is responsible for upholding a code of ethics and standards of practice. The group also serves as an advisory body for educational and certification programs that are focused strictly on California law and the needs of California homeowners. Other professional community managers elected to the board from around the state were Mary Walker of Associa–Desert Resort Management/Rancho La Quinta Masters Association in La Quinta, who was elected vice chair. René Decker with PowerStone Property Management in Irvine was elected corporate secretary.
