San Diego Has Yet to Weigh In
On San Onofre Nuclear Plant
Del Mar has done it. So have Vista and Solana Beach, even Los Angeles. But one municipal powerhouse has been conspicuously absent in the debate about the future of the troubled San Onofre nuclear plant. That’s the city of San Diego, KPBS reports. Del Mar, Solana Beach, Vista and Los Angeles have all called on federal regulators not to allow San Onofre to re-open without public hearings. Los Angeles is pushing for evidentiary hearings, the kind you see in court cases for San Onofre majority owner Southern California Edison. The hope is to require Edison to prove that the nuclear plant is safe to re-open. It was shut down nearly a year ago after a tube break inside its new steam generators caused a tiny radiation leak. Edison wants to re-open the plant and run it at reduced power under the theory that may allow it to avoid tube ruptures. San Diego has yet to enter the fray. Political Scientist Carl Luna expects that to happen soon. “I would be surprised if in the new year, particularly with a Democratic majority on the council and a Democrat for mayor, you don’t see a more aggressive stance on this issue,” Luna said.
UltraStar Sells West Coast Theaters
Digital Cinema Destinations Corp. and joint venture partner Start Media have acquired seven theaters with a total of 74 digital screens from UltraStar Cinemas, including six theaters in the Southern California/San Diego market and a seventh near Phoenix. “The strategic acquisition of UltraStar’s seven West Coast-based theaters is an important milestone for Digiplex and is consistent with our goal to opportunistically expand the company’s domestic theater circuit to approximately 100 theaters and 1,000 screens,” said Digital Cinema Chairman and CEO Bud Mayo.
General Dynamics Acquires Applied Physical Sciences Corp.
General Dynamics, parent company of NASSCO, has acquired Applied Physical Sciences Corp., described as a leading provider of applied research and development services. Applied Physical Sciences headquarters and manufacturing facility are located in Groton, Conn. It also has several other offices, including one in San Diego. The acquisition was for cash. The price was not disclosed.
El Cajon Man Appointed to Chiropractic Examiners Board
Frank Ruffino, 49, of El Cajon, has been appointed to the California Board of Chiropractic Examiners by Gov. Jerry Brown. Ruffino has been acting correctional business manager and community partnership manager at the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility since 2008. He was regional administrative officer at the California Department of Fish and Game from 2004 to 2008 and hospital general services administrator at the California Department of Veterans Affairs from 2000 to 2004. Ruffino served in various positions at the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation from 1985 to 2000. He was a member of the Chula Vista Civil Service Commission and the Coalinga Planning Commission. The position does not require Senate confirmation and the compensation is $100 per diem. Ruffino is registered decline-to-state.
SAIC Gets $17 Million Coast Guard Contract
Science Applications International Corp. has been awarded a contract by the U.S. Coast Guard to provide services and materials for the operational support of the USCG Integrated Health Information System. The contract value is $17 million. Work will be performed in San Diego,Falls Church Va.
and the designated Coast Guard Operations Systems Center.
