Filner Outlasts DeMaio in Mayor’s Race

Rep. Bob Filner, D-San Diego, outlasted Councilman Carl DeMaio to claim the San Diego mayor’s office, according to unofficial results released early Wednesday. With all precincts reporting, Filner had 51.5 percent of the vote, compared to 48.5 for DeMaio, with about 10,000 votes separating the two candidates out of more than 320,000 cast. Filner is the first Democrat elected mayor of San Diego since Maureen O’Connor in 1988. If he had won, DeMaio would have become the first openly gay Republican mayor of a large U.S. city. Filner, who will be San Diego’s 35th mayor, is scheduled to be inaugurated Dec. 3 at Golden Hall. (City News Service)

Sherri Lightner Retains Her City Council Seat

Sherri Lightner has beaten Ray Ellis, 53 percent to 47 percent, in San Diego City Council District 1. The win means Democrats retain their majority. Lightner, the incumbent, and Republican challenger Ellis had been engaged in a tight race since the June primary. Ellis received more votes in the primary and was viewed as being part of a slate of candidates supported by Councilman Carl DeMaio. (KPBS)

Port Commissioner Unseats Brian Bilbray

Democratic Port Commissioner Scott Peters appears to have unseated Rep. Brian Bilbray (R-Solana Beach) in the 52nd District. Bilbray, who currently represents the 50th district, was running for the newly redrawn 52nd, which has no incumbent. The 52nd district includes Coronado, Point Loma, Ocean Beach, Pacific Beach, Marine Corps Air Station Miramar and parts of North County, including Poway and Ranco Bernardo. (City News Service)

Dave Roberts Appears Winner in Supervisor’s Race

Solana Beach Councilman Dave Roberts appears to have defeated Steve Danon in a tight race to fill the San Diego County Board of Supervisors seat being vacated by Pam Slater-Price. With all precincts reporting, Roberts, the Democratic deputy mayor of the North County coastal city, had 50.7 percent of the vote, compared to 49.3 for Republican Danon, according to totals released early today. Only about 1,900 votes separated the two, and it was not immediately known how many provisional or questioned ballots remained to be tallied. If his lead holds, Roberts will become the first new supervisor in San Diego County since 1995 and the body’s lone Democrat. (KPBS)

Jerry Brown’s Tax Hike For Schools a Winner

Gov. Jerry Brown’s tax hike for schools surged to victory early Wednesday. Proposition 30 was up 54 percent to 46 percent with about 94.8 percent of the statewide vote tallied as of 5:25 a.m. Proposition 30 was one of three tax hikes before voters, including a competing measure to raise money for schools and another to close a tax loophole that favors out-of-state corporations. Proposition 30 raises the state sales tax by a quarter cent on the dollar for four years and increase the income tax for those earning $250,000 or more per year for seven years. The $6 billion in new annual revenues would go to schools and to help local governments pay for new public safety obligations thrust on them by the state. (U-T San Diego)
