Former La Jolla Home of Roger Revelle Sold for $8.5 Million
The former La Jolla home of noted scientist Dr. Roger Revelle has been sold for $8.5 million, according to Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage. The two-story home, called “Casa del Lido” (Home on the Beach), had been in the Revelle family since it was built in 1922. According to the Revelle family, the sellers of the property, they are pleased that the home has now passed on to a new family who appreciates its beautiful setting and legacy. The buyers of the property were not identified.
UnitedHealthcare Grant to Benefit
Downtown Emergency Winter Shelter
UnitedHealthcare is giving a $250,000 grant to the San Diego Housing Commission to help operate the city of San Diego Downtown Emergency Winter Shelter, one of two temporary shelters for the area’s homeless. The grant is expected to provide more than half of the total funding for the Downtown shelter this winter, covering operating expenses, meals, leased shower facilities and utilities. Located in Barrio Logan, the shelter will provide 220 beds and shelter during the coldest and wettest months of the year; it is expected to help about 800 homeless people during the four-month period.
Embarcadero Project Update Set for Nov. 28
The Joint Powers Authority for the North Embarcadero Visionary Plan will meet at 3 p.m. on Nov. 28 to receive a construction update on the plan’s first phase and the environmental impact report on the plan. The meeting will be held in the board room of the Port of San Diego’s Administration Building, 3165 Pacific Highway, San Diego.
Rules Committee Passes Citizen United Resolution
A resolution in support of a constitutional amendment to overturn the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in the Citizens United campaign finance case was passed by a downsized San Diego City Council Rules Committee, City News Service reports. The resolution, passed on a 3-0 vote, was crafted in response to a 2010 high court decision holding that political spending by corporations and unions is protected by the First Amendment right to free speech. The ruling led to the creation of so-called Super PACS that funneled huge sums of money into this year’s elections. A dozen state legislatures have called for an amendment to overturn the ruling, including California, said Councilwoman Marti Emerald, who introduced the resolution.
Construction Begins on Solan Ranch Elementary School
Balfour Beatty Construction and the Solana Beach School District have broken ground on the new $27.6 million Solana Ranch Elementary School, the seventh elementary school in the district. The project totals more than 68,000 square feet of building space on 11.65 acres. It includes the construction of a two-story, 60,143-square-foot classroom building, a one-story, 5,233-square-foot multi-purpose building, and a one story, 2,935-square-foot child development center preschool. The estimated date of completion for the new school is March 2014, with classes beginning in the new facility in the fall of 2014. Balfour Beatty Construction’s project team includes Grace Chan, project manager; Bryan Rasmussen, superintendent; Molly Engelbert, project engineer and Melissa Frazar, project accountant. The architect for the project is Harley Ellis Devereaux.
