UCSD Sports Medicine
UC San Diego Health System’s sports medicine division has been named the official medical partner of the 2013 ITU World Triathlon San Diego, set for April 18-20 in Mission Beach. UC San Diego Sports Medicine will provide 30 medical staff volunteers to provide medical care at the triathlon to help prevent, and if necessary treat, any orthopaedic injuries or medical conditions. Holiday Joyride
The San Diego County Bicycle Coalition will hold its Holiday Joyride on Dec. 13 at 5:30 p.m. at the Mission Brewery in Downtown’s East Village. The event, sponsored by Car2Go, starts with a neighborhood Joyride for cyclists of all abilities, pedaling through Downtown and returning to Mission Brewery. The celebration continues at Mission Brewery with craft beer, food trucks, a silent auction and prizes. The Bicycle Coalition will present the 2012 Golden Gear Advocacy awards. Tickets are $10 for members, $15 for nonmembers.
Mayor Sanders Says His Goodbyes
Out-going San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders said his official goodbyes to the media Wednesday. In his final news
conference as Mayor, Sanders reflected on his seven years in office, KPBS reports. He listed some accomplishments, including streamlining city government and getting some major civic projects off the ground. His proudest accomplishment? Financial reform. He told reporters that he and his staff were “immersed’” with fiscal issues the first two years, as they tried to get the financially troubled city back into the bond market and implement recommendations of a consultant. Sanders admits he didn’t always like the job of mayor and often found it to be too political. “You know, I’ve enjoyed it from the perspective that we’ve been able to get a lot done,” he said. “But I’m not a politician by nature; I’m not a politician by training. And I found politics to be a relatively difficult occupation.” Sanders will become president of the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce early next year. He figures to get a generous bump in salary over his $100,000 annual pay as mayor — a figure frozen during his entire term (council members make $75,000 annually).
Rep. Susan Davis Announces Constituent
Lottery for Presidential Inauguration
Congresswoman Susan Davis announced a lottery for tickets to the inauguration of President Barack Obama on Jan. 21, Scoop San Diego reports. Davis will randomly select inauguration tickets for constituents of the new 53rd Congressional District. Constituents can enter Davis’s Inauguration Lottery at: susandavisforms.house.gov/forms/form/?ID=2297. The entry form must be completed by Sunday. Constituents will be chosen at random and winners will be notified via email by Dec. 7 so they can make their travel plans. Potential entrants should be aware that inaugural tickets are standing only and it can be bitter cold in Washington in January. Also, winners must pick up their tickets in person in Washington D.C. Tickets may not be given to others or sold.
LaManna Elected President of California Board of Accountancy
Leslie LaManna, a partner in the public accounting firm of LaManna & LaManna, CPAs and a member of the California Board of Accountancy, has been elected president of the accountancy board. LaManna previously served as vice president and secretary/treasurer of the CBA and president of the San Diego chapter of the California Society of CPAs. LaManna also served as adjunct professor in accounting for UC San Diego Extension.
Sustainability Symposium to be Staged Dec. 13
Cuyamaca College will host its third annual Sustainability Symposium on Dec. 13 at the college’s performing arts theater. The college is located at 900 Rancho San Diego Parkway in Rancho San Diego. This is the first year the 8:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. forum will be followed by a Green Vendor and Networking Fair from 1:30-3:30 p.m. The event doubles as a scholarship fundraiser for students pursuing careers in green or sustainable industries. Admission is $35 for the public or $5 for students and includes parking, a continental breakfast and lunch. All proceeds will be donated to the Grossmont and Cuyamaca Colleges Foundation to create a scholarship endowment for students taking sustainability courses at Cuyamaca College. Keynote speaker is Philip Jordan, vice president of Carlsbad-based BW Research Partnership, who will talk about emerging trends in the green economy. NAIOP to Install John Garrigan as President
NAIOP San Diego, the Commercial Real Estate Development Association, will install John Garrigan, vice president of LBA Realty, as its 2013 president on Jan. 1. In addition to Garrigan, the other elected board members are Tom Turner of Procopio Cory Hargreaves & Savitch as president elect; Jeff Burges of BURGES property+company as treasurer; and Brig Black of Lincoln Property Company as immediate-past president. Next July, NAIOP will debut “The Suitcase Party” – a formal gala held in a private hangar that will benefit The MARSOC Foundation (U.S. Marine Corp Forces, Special Operations Command). San Diego will host the national NAIOP Development Conference in October.
