The Irvine Company, Largest Office Building
Owner in San Diego, Marks 30th Anniversary
The Irvine Company, which owns more than 7.5 million square feet of office space in San Diego and a major owner of apartments in the county, is marking its 30th anniversary in San Diego this year. The company’s office holdings are in La Jolla-UTC, Downtown, Sorrento Mesa, Del Mar Heights and Mission Valley. Its Downtown holdings include One America Plaza and Symphony Towers. Major San Diego companies leasing space in the company’s buildings include Qualcomm, Peregrine Semiconductor, ServiceNow.com, McKenna Long, DLA Piper, Barney & Barney, EvoNexus and ConVis. The office buildings are home to 600 businesses employing more than 20,000 people. It owns more than 3,200 apartments in La Jolla-UTC, Mission Valley, Torrey Hills and Carlsbad that are home to more than 5,000 San Diegans.
In the past three decades, San Diego has become the company’s second largest market after its base of Orange County. “The fact that many of us are San Diegans solidifies our commitment to the market,” said Tom Sullivan, senior vice president of development and a San Diego native.
In June, the company acquired Centerside I, a 13-story, 205,000-square-foot office building in Mission Valley. The acquisition complements the Irvine Company’s ownership of Centerside II, a 16-story, 287,000-square-foot office building next door. The company also is in the advanced design phase for a 340,000-square-foot, 15-story office building to be constructed at its La Jolla Centre office campus. The building will complement La Jolla Centre’s two existing office buildings and complete the campus as an integrated office development. “We will continue to be active and are poised to make moves,” said John Turner, San Diego regional vice president of Irvine Company Office Properties. “Our story in San Diego isn’t over yet.”
