County Treasurer-Tax Collector Sends Out
Another Batch of Property Tax Refunds
County Treasurer-Tax Collector Dan McAllister has begun sending property owners 1,771 property tax refunds having a total value of $1.19 million. McAllister said the average property tax refund in this batch is estimated at $672, while the lowest is $10.04. The highest is $91,935. Property sales over the last six to eight months have resulted in a large number of negative reassessments, according to McAlliser. “Since the first of the year, we have mailed out 18,556 refunds with a value of $10,551,376.58,” he said. McAllister. A negative supplemental assessment is generated by a decrease of the current value or other downward assessments. Taxpayers who believe they may be owed a refund can call a refund hotline at (619) 531-5813.
Bernardo Executive Center Acquired

Brookwood Financial Partners LLC has acquired the Bernardo Executive Center, a multi-tenant office property in Rancho Bernardo. It is the company’s second acquisition in the San Diego area in the last 10 months. In October 2011, Brookwood acquired Mission Valley Crossroads, a 139,727-square-foot office building in Mission Valley. Constructed in 1984, Bernardo Executive Center has 173,244 rentable square feet ande is 78 percent leased. It consists of two two-story office buildings and one three-story office building. TA/Western LLC was the seller, represented by CB Richard Ellis.
Port Commissioners Approve New
Lease with Dole Fresh Fruit Co.
The San Diego Port Commission board approved a new 24.5-year lease with Dole Fresh Fruit Co. to import and export fresh fruit at the Tenth Avenue Marine Terminal. The lease calls for the port and Dole to work on infrastructure improvements to improve cargo operations. Officials said the port will be investing $7 million in shore power equipment at the terminal that will service Dole’s vessels. The vessels will use shore power while berthed at the Tenth Avenue terminal.
United States University Names New President and CEO
United States University, which has a campus in Chula Vista, has appointed Timothy P. Cole as the new president and CEO. Cole has more than 20 years of experience working in postsecondary education. His most recent positions include serving as president of Hamilton Colleges in Iowa and Nebraska, and chief executive officer of Concorde Career Colleges Inc. The university provides degrees in business, education, nursing, health sciences, general studies and management. Courses are offered online and on campus.
Retailers and Tech Companies to Spend
More Advertising Dollars on Online Media
The percentage of all advertising dollars spent in San Diego by retailers on online media will grow from 9.6 percent in 2011 to 13.7 percent in 2016, according to a report by BIA/Kelsey, a media consultant. The firm’s Media Ad View report also said spending by technology companies on online media will grow from 23.1 percent to 29.1 percent over that same period. “While traditional media still retains the largest portion of ad dollars, businesses are allocating an increasingly higher percentage of their budgets to digital media,” said Mark Fratrik, vice president and chief economist for BIA/Kelsey.
Author Salman Rushdie to Appear in San Diego
Author Salman Rushdie, who was “sentenced to death” in 1989 by the Ayatollah Khomeini for his novel “The Satanic Verses, ” will appear in La Jolla on Sept. 22 to promote a book he has written that describes his life underground after the death threat. Rushdie’s appearance at 7:30 p.m. at the Mandeville Auditorium at UC San Diego is sponsored by Warwick’s and the Revelle Forum. Rushdie will discuss and sign his new book, “Joseph Anton: A Memoir,” which describes how he and his family lived with the threat of murder for more than nine years. The book’s name is taken from two writers admired by Rushdie — Joseph Conrad and Anton Checkhov. Joseph Anton was an alias given to the writer by his police protection team.
