Hilton Hotel is Planned for the Old Fat City Property on Pacific Highway
A land parcel on Pacific Highway that was once planned for an apartment project but has since been turned into a site for a Hilton Hotel has been sold to FC Acquisitions Co. LLC with hotel construction scheduled to begin in January. The seller was Frank Fat Properties LP. According to Cushman & Wakefield, which represented the seller, developers GLJ and Jonathan Segal will head the building efforts. The apartment project that Segal and company originally planned ran into stiff opposition from the nearby Solar Turbines plant, who said the project would interfere with its business operations. The plan failed to get the necessary city approval. The plan was converted into a hotel project that obtained a permit for construction. The six-story Hilton Hotel will have 364 rooms, two pools and spas, multiple dining and meeting rooms, gym facilities and 2,500 square feet of retail and restaurant space. The developers said the theme will reflect the Fat City Building, which was developed by Tom Fat of the Fat Family of Sacramento.
Graduate of UC San Diego Donates $100,000 to Int’l Research Program
Haley Hunter-Zinck
A UC San Diego international research program has received a $100,000 gift from Haley Hunter-Zinck, a 2009 graduate who conducted research at Australia’s Monash University before getting her bachelor’s degree. Hunter-Zinck made the donation to the Pacific Rin Undergraduate Experiences (PRIME) in memory of her late mother, Jennifer Zinck. As part of PRIME, UC San Diego students become integrated members of a research group at a university or research institute located within the Pacific Rim. “Conducting research on my own project at a university in Australia had a huge impact on me,” said Hunter-Zinck. “It confirmed for me how much I wanted to go into research. I hope that this gift will help more students have the same influential experiences.” A bioinformatics major, Hunter-Zinck analyzed adverse effects of the antidepressant EMSAM during her time at Monash University. Today she is working toward her Ph.D. in computational biology and medicine at Cornell University. Her research involves creating algorithms that associate genetic mutations with complex diseases such as cardiovascular disease.
40 Sailors Take Part in First CPO Legacy Academy Aboard the USS Midway Museum
A group of 40 sailors who have been selected to advance to the rank of chief petty officer next month are taking part in the first CPO Legacy Academy aboard the USS Midway Museum Downtown. During the program, which began Sunday and ends on Friday, the group of sailors, along with their leaders and mentors, attend training sessions, live and work aboard the museum ship as well as participate in volunteer projects to help preserve and restore the historic vessel. This is the first year for the San Diego area program. The Midway CPO Legacy Academy is modeled after successful leadership programs offered on board the USS Constitution in Boston as well as the USS Missouri Museum at Pearl Harbor. The goal of the program is to help the sailors develop a stronger sense of naval heritage. Advancing to the enlisted rank of CPO is a major career milestone for a sailor.
Time Warner Cable SportsNet to Air Aztec Football and Basketball
Time Warner Cable SportsNet will air San Diego State, UNLV and Fresno State football and basketball games beginning with the 2012-13 season. The network, which launches Oct. 1, will telecast 12 live Mountain West Conference football games and more than 24 Mountain West basketball games. Aztec football games that will be aired include an Oct. 13 match with Colorado State, an Oct. 27 game agains UNLV, and a Nov. 24 game against Wyoming.
December Nights Set for Dec. 7-8
The city of San Diego and the San Diego Hall of Champions announced that this year’s December Nights — or what used to be called Christmas on the Prado — will be held Dec. 7-8 in Balboa Park. The event typically attracts 300,000 visitors over the two days.
