Scripps Research Receives $22.5 Million
Grant for Study of the Immune System
A team led by a scientist at The Scripps Research Institute has received a $22.5 million, five-year project renewal from the National Institutes of Health to uncover the workings of the immune system. The grant is focused on innovative technologies that will ultimately provide data for improving a wide range of human diseases that include viral and bacterial infections and inherited immune disorders. The grant’s principal investigator is Richard Ulevitch, professor and chairman emeritus at Scripps Research.
Cymer Donates $300,000 for Expansion
of SDSU’s Advanced Physics Lab
Technology firm Cymer has donated $300,000 to San Diego State University to expand and update the Advanced Physics Lab and to honor Richard “Doc” Morris, who taught there for most of his 55 years at the university. SDSU is seeking additional support for the lab. “Doc’s lab is where we really learned the experimental side of physics,” said Mark Johnson, a 1983 graduate who is product manager at ViaSat Inc. “It’s critically important that every physics student has the opportunity to go through the hands-on lab experience.” Cymer develops light sources for use in advanced lithography to create chips for all electronic devices.
Palms of La Mesa Sells for $7.7 Million
The Palms of La Mesa, a 78-unit apartment complex on Mohawk Street in La Mesa, has been sold for $7.7 million to a limited liability company named The Palms of La Mesa Apartments. The complex consists of two adjacent parcels of 38 units and 40 units. Constructed in 1969 and 1970, the gated community features two-story buildings, covered and open parking, two pools and private balconies. Sellers of the property were Blue Corner Capital, Monroe Trust and Jim Purdy. Colliers International represented both parties in the transaction.
Sullivan Solar Power Expands
Sullivan Solar Power, a fast-growing solar company, has expanded to a new office location adjacent to its headquarters in Mira Mesa. The firm moved to its current headquarters in April of last year with plans to stay in the building for three years. But the company grew out of space because of its large intake of new employees. “The demand for solar is so abundant in our region that our company continues to grow at an ever-increasing rate,” said Daniel Sullivan, founder and president. “We are really excited to be creating additional local jobs with our new availability of space.” The company currently employs 67 workers and is planning on adding eight new employees by the end of the year.
IT Recruiting Firm Opens San Diego Office
Boston-based AVID Technical Resources, an IT recruiting company, has opened a San Diego office at 3111 Camino del Rio North in Mission Valley. San Diego is the second California office that the firm has opened this summer. It opened a Los Angeles office earlier.
Bob Filner and Carl DeMaio
Scheduled for Sept. 17 Debate
A mayoral debate between Congressman Bob Filner and Councilman Carl DeMaio will be held Sept 17 under sponsorship of the San Diego North Chamber of Commerce and San Diego Regional Economic Development Corp. The event is at the Mandell Weiss Forum Theater at the La Jolla Playhouse, 2910 La Jolla Village Drive. Networking is at 6:30 p.m. and the debate is from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Reservations are required.
