DataQuick: Foreclosure Activity
Declines in County in 2nd Quarter
The number of San Diego County homes entering the formal foreclosure process during the second quarter dropped by 1.4 percent from the same period of 2011, according to San Diego-based DataQuick. A total of 4,099 Notices of Default (NODs) were recorded during the April-through-June period. That compared to 4,159 NODs in the second quarter of last year. Trustees Deeds recorded (TDs), or the finalized loss of a home to the formal foreclosure process, totaled 1,391 in the second quarter of this year, a 49.7 percent decline from the 2,763 TDs recorded in the same period of last year. Statewide, the number of California homes entering the formal foreclosure process dropped in the second quarter to its lowest level since early 2007.
Sally Ride Succumbs to Pancreatic Cancer
Sally Ride, the first woman to fly into space, has died, after a 17-month battle with pancreatic cancer. She was 61. Sally Ride Science, the San Diego company she developed to provide classroom materials, programs and professional help for K-12 teachers, released the following statement: “Sally Ride died peacefully July 23, 2012, after a courageous 17-month battle with pancreatic cancer. Sally lived her life to the fullest, with boundless energy, curiosity, intelligence, passion, commitment, and love. Her integrity was absolute; her spirit was immeasurable; her approach to life was fearless. Sally was a physicist, the first American woman to fly in space, a science writer, and the president and CEO of Sally Ride Science. She had the rare ability to understand the essence of things and to inspire those around her to join her pursuits. Sally’s historic flight into space captured the nation’s imagination and made her a household name. She became a symbol of the ability of women to break barriers and a hero to generations of adventurous young girls. After retiring from NASA, Sally used her high profile to champion a cause she believed in passionately — inspiring young people, especially girls, to stick with their interest in science, to become scientifically literate, and to consider pursuing careers in science and engineering. In addition to Tam O’Shaughnessy, her partner of 27 years, Sally is survived by her mother, Joyce; her sister, Bear; her niece, Caitlin, and nephew, Whitney; her staff of 40 at Sally Ride Science; and many friends and colleagues around the country.”
Realty Company Purchases Bonita Centre
Donahue Schriber Realty has purchased Bonita Centre, a 98,854-square-foot shopping center at 4340-4450 Bonita Road in Chula Vista. The sales price was not disclosed. Bonita Centre LL was the seller. Center stores include Vons, Rite Aid, McDonalds, Bank of America, Subway, H&R Block and Baskin Robbins. CBRE brokers represented the seller.

Augie Saucedo 
Augie Saucedo has been hired as executive chef of Donavan’s Prime Seafood in the Gaslamp Quarter in Downtown San Diego. Saucedo’s previous experience includes Mission Inn in Riverside, The Shores Restaurant at La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club and The Marine Room. He also managed the culinary staff at the Chameleon Café in Coronado and The Shelter Pointe Hotel and Marina.
John Kenney 
BCL Inc., a commercial real estate investment firm, has named John Kenney as vice president of acquisitions. He will be responsible for all of the company’s purchase activities in Southern California. Kenney, who has more than 10 years of experience in real estate investment, previously was vice president of acquisitions for Westcore Properties. He also was a senior associate with PricewaterhouseCoopers in San Diego.
Gary Elliott 
Amanda Epple 
Gary Elliott and Amanda Epple have joined the construction management division of Simon Wong Engineering. Elliott joins SWE as an electrical engineer. He has more than 34 years of experience in the field managing communications, intelligent transportation system installations. Epple joins the construction management division as an engineer. She graduated from UC Davis with a degree in civil engineering. Epple is working as an office engineer with Simon Wong Engineering and is currently working on various projects for Caltrans District 11 out of their Carmel Valley office.
Lorraine Ahlquist 
Lorraine Ahlquist has been named the environmental manager for the San Diego office of Parsons Brinckerhoff, a construction management organization. Ahlquist has over 18 years of experience managing environmental documentation for a range of transportation projects. Prior to joining Parsons Brinckerhoff, she was a regional manager leading environmental pursuits throughout California related to transportation, public works and federal markets. Ahlquist holds a master’s degree and a bachelor’s degree from Florida International University.
Michael Brown
Dowling & Yahnke LLC has hired Michael Brown as a senior portfolio manager. Brown previously was a partner at Deloitte, where he spent 15 years working in the capital markets with public companies and private equity investor clients. He holds a master’s degree from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.
Today is National Drive-Thru Day
The drive-through feature at fast food restaurants — where orders were taken by intercom and handed out a window to drivers — was originated by Robert Peterson at a Jack in the Box restaurant in San Diego in 1951, which served hamburgers for 18 cents, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. However, that is not a universally accepted fact. In-n-Out Burger claims to have built the first drive-through restaurant in 1948 in Baldwin Park, Calif. Drive-throughs are a feature of many of the more than 211,000 fast food restaurants in the U.S., which generate over $151 billion in sales each year.
