San Diego City Employees Win
Bidding for Landfill Operations
San Diego city employees have won a bid competition to run operations of the Miramar Landfill, saving the city at least $2.7 million annually, Mayor Jerry Sanders announced. City employees have won all four competitions for city functions, with an annual savings of around $8.5 million. Their proposal will trim 11 full-time employees, reduce the amount of equipment they use and restructure staff schedules, according to the mayor. He said the workers who lose their job will probably be able to catch on elsewhere in the city. The mayor said when the managed competition program was approved by voters six years ago, he expected city workers to win 80 percent of the time. Private businesses should continue to compete, he said. Several other functions are in the bidding process right now. Sanders said he expects bids to be turned in next week on street and sidewalk maintenance. He also announced that the next service to go out to bidding is curbside garbage collection, which is performed by the city for most residents. — City News Service
Air Force Awards Northrup Grumman
$156 Million Contract for UAV System
Northrup Grumman Corp. has been awarded contract modifications totaling $156 million from the U.S. Air Force to continue operating and maintaining the Battlefield Airborne Communications Node (BACN) system for overseas missions of the Global Hawk unmanned aircraft. The company was also awarded a $50 million contract modification for platform maintenance support of three aircraft through February 2013. Northrop Grumman is the prime contractor for the EQ-4B Global Hawk aircraft and the development, fielding and maintenance of the BACN system.
Maritime Museum Acquires Swift Boat
For Renovation and Display in San Diego
The Maritime Museum of San Diego has acquired a Vietnam War-era Swift Boat from the Republic of Malta for renovation and permanent display in San Diego. Museum representatives were in Malta last Friday for a ceremony to honor Swift Boat sailors from both the U.S. and Malta and to coordinate the turnover of the vessel. The Swift Boat is to arrive in San Diego in late August. It is to be renovated locally.The initial $100,000 transportation and restoration cost is being funded by donations to the Maritime Museum. Formally called Patrol Craft Fast, the boats were first put into service in 1965 when American sailors used them to patrol the coastline of South Vietnam to prevent sea infiltration of soldiers and munitions from North Vietnam. The crafts were nicknamed “Swift Boats” for their speed and agility in moving in and out and harm’s way. (Photo: Swift Boat in foreground.)
Justice Judith Haller to Receive
2012 Professional Award
Justice Judith L. Haller has been selected to receive the American Inns of Court 2012 Professionalism Award for the Ninth Circuit. The award will be presented by Judge Mary M. Schroeder of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in Maui, Hawaii on Aug. 16. Haller is an associate justice on the California Courts of Appeal, Fourth District, Division One, in San Diego. Previously she served as a San Diego County Superior Court trial judge from 1989 to 1994. She was a partner at Higgs, Fletcher & Mack, one of San Diego’s oldest law firms, which she joined as an associate attorney in 1979. She began her legal career in 1976 as a deputy district attorney in San Diego County.

Kathy Randall 
The Parkinson’s Association of San Diego has appointed Kathy Y. Randall, an expert consultant in elder care services, as president of its board of directors. Randall currently serves as president of Randall Elder Care Consultants and Age @ Home Elder Care Management. Age @ Home helps adult children manage the care of aging parents if they cannot be with them due to long distance or because of work or family obligations. Randall has more than 25 years of experience in social work. She specializes in dementia care and is a qualified dementia care specialist through the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America. In San Diego, she serves as president and founder of Scripps Ranch Elder Care Alliance.
Steve Schweitzer 
Retired Marine Corps veteran and senior advocate Steve Schweitzer has been named director of outreach and client services for InTouch at Home, a Senior Resource Group LLC company based in Solana Beach. Schweitzer will act as InTouch At Home’s representative with community partners, concerned advocates and medical professionals throughout San Diego working to provide resources for seniors who need assistance to continue living independently. Schweitzer was in the Marine Corps for 27 years, retiring in 2005 at the rank of master gunnery sergeant.
Mike Krenn
Mike Krenn has joined Procopio, Cory, Hargreaves & Savitch as chief marketing officer. The position includes leadership of the firm’s new incubator program, Procopio LaunchPad, in Del Mar Heights. Prior to joining Procopio, Krenn spent 11 years with DLA Piper, where he served as U.S. director of business development and as managing director and founder of the Venture Pipeline Group. From 1997 to 2000, he was the business development and marketing director for Cooley Godward in San Diego.
