Japan Airlines Will Launch Nonstop
Service Between Tokyo and San Diego
Aboard the 787-8 Dreamliner
Japan Airlines will launch new nonstop service between Tokyo and San Diego on Dec. 2. The new service is a joint business route with American Airlines, JAL’s joint business partner. The service will fly four times weekly with flights operating Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. It is the first nonstop service between San Diego and Asia, connecting San Diego to destinations throughout Asia, including Hong Kong, Singapore, Manila and Taipei. The route will operate with the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner.
Broadway Athletic and Swim Club
To Open in July in Downtown
A grand opening party will be held in July for the new Broadway Athletic and Swim Club on the fifth floor and rooftop deck of 501 West Broadway in Downtown San Diego. Designed by Gensler Architecture, the facility is 16,000 square feet and features more than 27 pieces of new cardio equipment with individual viewing screens and Internet access, a MoveStong functional training station, Kinesis circuit training equipment and free weight areas. Membership will include access to an outdoor rooftop pool; a sundeck and cabanas; 35 group fitness classes including Zumba, Pilates and boot camp; fresh air yoga; and an outdoor spin experience providing fitness benefits and social connections. Locker rooms will feature showers, steam rooms and saunas. Additional services will include personal training, massage and physical therapy.
Sex, Drugs & Social Media
“Sex, Drugs & Social Media — How New Technology Can Make or Break a Case,” is the title of a June 20 program sponsored by San Diego Superior Court, the San Diego County Bar Association and the Society of Professional Journalists. Attorneys and media members will discuss how social media help them gather information, while judges discuss what courtroom considerations are now in place because of social media. The program will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the SDCBA Bar Center, 1333 Seventh Ave., in Downtown San Diego. Admission is free.
Geico to Hire More than 100 New Associates
The San Diego regional office of Geico (Government Employees Insurance Company) has announced plans to hire more than 100 new associates between now and the end of the year. The auto insurer said career opportunities exist for sales agents, customer service agents and claims representatives. Geico offers a benefits package that includes health plans, paid training, tuition reimbursement, 401(k), paid vacation and opportunities for advancement. More information is at geico.jobs/sandiego.
Bond Oversight Committee Seeks 3 New Members
The Independent Citizens’ Bond Oversight Committee, the volunteer citizens group monitoring construction improvement projects at Grossmont Hospital, is looking for three additional members. There is one existing vacancy and two members’ terms are expiring on June 30. The 11-member group has been meeting since 2006, when voters approved Proposition G, a $247 million bond ballot measure. The bond-financed construction at the hospital began in 2007, and is scheduled to continue over the next few years. Volunteers must live within the district boundaries. PERSONNEL MOVES
San Diego — Nick Hofer has been named vice president of marketing for OneRoof Energy, a residential solar company. Hofer previously spearheaded a marketing program as Western region general manager for Zeta Interactive. His marketing experience also includes branding strategy, product management and campaign development for a range of brands, including Kodak, Sony, Hewlett-Packard, Intuit and Gateway Computers. Hofer holds degrees from the University of South Dakota and Stanford University.
San Diego — Joe Shapiro, dean of San Diego State University College of Extended Studies, has been named chair of the University Professional & Continuing Education Association International Network. The International Network is one of six that serve UPCEA members by providing professional development, research and information, networking and communication, and awards and recognition of excellence in their practice areas. Shapiro has been the dean of the College of Extended Studies since July 2007.
