Low Voter Turnout Expected
Early evidence points to a low turnout for today’s primary election in San Diego County, according to the Registrar of Voters. As of Saturday, 2,212 people had walked into the registrar’s office in Kearny Mesa to cast ballots in the past few weeks, compared to 8,535 in the same period two years ago, Registrar Deborah Seiler said. Of those, 357 came for special early voting hours on Saturday. She said that is also less than the Saturday before election day in previous years. “This will be a low turnout election,” Seiler told City News Service. “I expect about 40 percent.” Polls close at 8 p.m. The first batch of results is expected to be released just after the polls close. San Diego’s traditional Election Central event at Golden Hall will be held in the evening.
Eight-Building Portfolio in Downtown
San Diego Sells for $13.03 Million
The Waterfall Block, an assortment of eight buildings totaling 58,288 square feet in Downtown San Diego, has been sold for $13.03 million to a buyer who was in a joint venture with Starwood Capital Group. The sale was arranged by Marcus & Millichap Real Estate Investment Services. The area is bordered by Seventh and Eighth avenues, Broadway and C Street. Ben Tashakorian, vice president of investments for Marcus & Millichap, said the previous owner planned to redevelop the site and acquired the properties over the course of three years, but the economic downturn decreased the properties’ value. Tashakorian represented the seller in short sale negotiations with three lenders. The properties include retail, office, mixed-use and residential hotel space.
Businessman Gifts $1 Million to San Diego Hospice
Businessman-philanthropist Conrad T. Prebys has made a $1 million gift to the San Diego Hospice and The Institute for Palliative Medicine, the second large donation he has made to the facility. In 2009, Prebys gave the hospice $1.5 million to establish the Conrad T. Prebys Fund for Charitable Care. The latest gift will be added to the fund. Kathleen Pacurar, president and CEO of the hospice, said persons in need of hospice services will have access to them regardless of their ability to pay for hospice care.
Diabetes Expert Installed as President of
the American College of Endocrinology
Daniel Einhorn, medical director of the Scripps Whittier Diabetes Institute, a nationally recognized diabetes expert, has been installed as president of the American College of Endocrinology for 2012-2013. Einhorn is the immediate past president of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists. He is an editor and contributor to books and articles, including publications from the American Medical Association and the Royal Society of Medicine, and has been a teacher in graduate medical education throughout the world.
San Diego Women’s Foundation Installs New President
Rita Solberg, a community volunteer for more than 25 years, has been installed as president of the San Diego Women’s Foundation board of directors, succeeding Teresa Jacques. Solberg joined the foundation in 2004. She has served as president of the Junior League of San Diego as well as the Francis Parker School Parents’ Association. She is a past president of MADCAPS (Mothers and Daughters Charity Assisting Philanthropies) and was a board member of Voices for Children and Lutheran Social Services of Southern California.

Encinitas — Bridgette Young has joined the retail consumer lending team at Union Bank as a mortgage consultant and is based in the Encinitas branch. Before joining the bank, Young was a real estate agent for Pacific Sun Properties. Before that, she was a mortgage consultant for Paramount Residential Mortgage Group and Flagstar Bank.
Carlsbad —Kent Aden has been appointed vice president and senior Development officer for HomeFed Corp., overseeing the firm’s master-planned communities in California and Virginia. He will be responsible for managing entitlements, design, development and marketing for the 450-acre Ashville Park community in Virginia Beach, Va., the 2,800-acre Otay Land Co. project in Chula Vista and the 2,600-acre Fanita Ranch project in Santee. He also will oversee the completion of the 1,980-acre San Elijo Hills community in San Marcos. Aden was previously executive vice president of JPB Development and Otay Ranch New Homes.
San Diego — Taylor Schulte, a former Morgan Stanley adviser, has joined Beverly Hills Wealth Management as financial adviser and is working in the firm’s new San Diego office at 750 B. St, Suite 3300, in Downtown. Schulte will launch the firm’s new operation in the area, offering wealth management and portfolio development services to clients in the community. Prior to joining BHWM, Schulte was a financial adviser at Morgan Stanley where he provided personalized wealth management solutions.
