Men Who Rock

Mayoral Forum on Latino Issues

A mayoral candidates forum dedicated to Latino issues will be staged Thursday by the San Diego County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the San Diego La Raza Lawyers Association. It will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m at the Shiley Theater at the University of San Diego. Candidates will be asked about their views on education, employment, criminal justice, health care, immigration and other issues. Mayoral candidates are Carl DeMaio, Bob Filner, Nathan Fletcher and Bonnie Dumanis. Co-moderators will be Joanne Faryon and Elsa Sevilla of KPBS.

Sharp Rees-Stealy Opens Medical Center

Sharp Rees-Stealy has opened a medical center in Sorrento Mesa after completing a $19 million renovation program. A formal grand opening event for the facility is scheduled for June 21. The three-story Sharp Rees-Stealy Sorrento Mesa is located at 10243 Genetic Center Drive.

Realtors Group to Launch Suite of Online Tools

The San Diego Association of Realtors is preparing to launch Realtor Dash, a suite of online tools powered by Google that will give Realtors one-stop access to relevant information they need for their businesses. The association will begin testing the product in June with a full launch set for September. The new Google-powered dashboard will provide access to all commonly used Realtor tools, replacing as many as eight logins with one. Association members will have access to Realtor Dash with paid membership. Nonmembers can purchase the Google Apps portion for $19 before Sept. 30 and $35 after Oct. 1.

Student-Run Companies Advance
in Junior Achievement Competiton

Two student-run companies from Westview High School and one from Harmonium have advanced to the Junior Achievement North American competition by besting 12 other teams at “The Next Big Thing” Entrepreneurs Showcase sponsored by Junior Achievement of San Diego and Imperial Counties. The teams had only six minutes to showcase their businesses to the judges. Westview High School’s Place~Mate and Local Noise, and Harmonium’s Cast-A-Waste emerged the winners. Place~Mate is an interactive place mat intended for preschoolers and has multiple uses, winning the first place. Local Noise took home second place for its service that promotes bands and sells concert tickets. Winning the third place and the Ingenuity Award for the most creative product, Cast-A-Waste presented its worm casting product used to enhance the soil. Junior Achievement USA will announce on June 15 if any of the three teams will progress to the summit in Washington, D.C. to win a $500 scholarship, a trophy and medal.

Symposium Brings Teachers, Former
Students Together for College Preparation

East San Diego County high school teachers and their former students will gather together on Wednesday for a daylong symposium on changes made to better prepare high school students for college. A panel presentation by Grossmont Union High School District English teachers and past graduates is set for 8:45 a.m. in Griffin Gate at Grossmont College. The 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. symposium is expected to draw more than 100 teachers sharing changes made this past year as part of the English Curriculum Alignment Project. The project uses student data and close collaboration between high school and college instructors to link coursework to ensure high-schoolers are ready for the reading, writing and critical thinking expected at the college level.

Website Launched on Chula Vista Bayfront Project

The Port of San Diego has launched a website (cvbayfront.com)  to provide information about the Chula Vista Bayfront Master Plan, which describes a project to transform 556 acres of industrial property on the waterfront into a residential and resort destination. In the project’s first 20 years, it will generate approximately $1.3 billion for the regional economy, including more than $11.5 million in annual tax revenues, according to port and city of Chula Vista officials.

Personnel Moves

San Diego — Ben Norton has been named president and chief operating officer for Internet Marketing Inc. Norton previously held a leadership position with Covario and was CEO of Silicon Space. He holds a bachelor’s degree from USC and a master’s degree from UC Irvine.
