Survey: San Diegans Want More Compact Development

San Diegans say they want the future to offer more compact development, even if that means smaller homes, according to a survey by The San Diego Foundation reported by KPBS. The foundation surveyed 30,000 residents for the “Our Greater San Diego Vision” project. The survey asked respondents to choose between four housing scenarios. The great majority chose a vision in which most housing would be townhomes, compact detached homes, and multistory buildings. Bill Geppert, chairman of the regional vision initiative, said respondents want to preserve resources and reduce travel time. “I think it’s affordability, it’s proximity, and ultimately I think people understand that there is limited land available,” he said. Lori Pfeiler, also with the vision initiative, said younger respondents favored an even more densely populated future, with homes close to jobs and entertainment. “When you talk about attracting the young and the restless, they want to live close to the action,” she said. The foundation is to issue its final report in July.

SDSU to Award Honorary Doctorate Degrees to S.D. Entrepreneurs

San Diego State will award honorary doctorate degrees to entrepreneurs Leonard Lavin and L. Robert Payne during commencement ceremonies May 19 at Viejas Arena. Lavin was founder and former CEO of the beauty supply manufacturing and marketing company Alberto Culver Co., which became an international Fortune 1,000 company. He also is credited with developing television’s first 15- and 30-second commercials. Since 2005, he has been involved with SDSU’s Entrepreneurial Management Center. His gifts to support the center have established Lavin VentureStart—a business plan competition,  and Lavin Entrepreneurs, a program for upper-division students. Payne is president and CEO of Multi-Ventures Inc., a real estate investment and management company. An SDSU alumnus, Payne is an active philanthropist supporting several local organizations including his long-time volunteer leadership at SDSU. Payne provided seed funding to create the Hospitality and Tourism Program and was one of three alumni who contributed a lead gift to support the Parma Payne Goodall Alumni Center.

Seminar Offers Tips on How to Get Rehired

Grossmont College Career Center’s Adult Reentry Program will host “Now That You’ve Been Laid Off,” a free seminar featuring tips on getting hired again, from 2 to 4 p.m. on May 9 in Griffin Center, the new student center building, Building 60, Room 140, on the El Cajon campus. Admission is free. The public is invited to attend. The speaker will be Tony Desylvester, a management trainer. Also available at the seminar will be information for adults who may be interested in returning to school to learn a new career, earn a college diploma or upgrade workplace skills for a job promotion, along with information on admission procedures, transfer programs and financial aid. Procopio Partner Named to SD Sport Innovators Advisory Board

Jason Femrite, a partner in the action sports and apparel group of Procopio, Cory, Hargreaves & Savitch, has been named to the advisory board of SD Sport Innovators (SDSI), a nonprofit business accelerating organization. Femrite’s emphasis in his practice is the action sports community. Prior to joining Procopio, he spent more than 12 years with Luce, Forward, Hamilton & Scripps, which recently was acquired by McKenna, Long & Aldridge, where he formed and led the firm’s action sports group.

San Diego — Abby Murphy has been named the new director of development for LightBridge Hospice Community Foundation. Murphy has more than 20 years of experience in fundraising and marketing. Before joining LightBridge, she held positions in the Arthritis Foundation in New England, most recently as vice president of philanthropy. Murphy was a development officer for Boston University’s School of Medicine. She holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of New Hampshire.
