Construction to Start on Housing for Seniors
Construction will start next week on Solterra, a mixed-use development in El Cajon that will featuring 46 residences for seniors in two buildings and street-level commercial spaces. Affirmed Housing Group, the developer, will hold a groundbreaking ceremony at 10 a.m. on April 3 at the site at Chambers Street and Linda Way in El Cajon. The project will have 46 one-bedroom units and three two-bedroom units. Community amenities will include on-site management, a computer lounge, gated and covered parking and a community room. Residents also can utilize a daily shuttle and/or a flex car. Solterra will have street-level commercial space with awning-shaded storefronts facing Chambers Street and Linda Way.
Philanthropists’ Former Home Sells For $2.2 Million 
The former home of San Diego philanthropists Anne and Abraham Ratner has been sold for $2.2 million to San Diego attorney Josh Gruenberg. The sale was announced by Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage in Point Loma. The three-bedroom, three-and-a-half bath house was designed by architect William Stevenson and sits on property over an acre in size. It was built in 1958 and features a motor courtyard that can fit 12 to 15 cars and a separate cabana with dressing rooms. Anne Ratner, who died in November 2011 at age 100, was active in the San Diego community and the property served as the venue for several galas and community events.
Conference Examines Latinos in San Diego County
The National Latino Research Center at Cal State San Marcos will present an April 4 conference examining the impact of the economy, health care, education and politics on Latino families. The conference will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the M. Gordon Clark Field House/University Student Union, 333 South Twin Oaks Valley Road, San Marcos. In San Diego County, the number of Latinos grew from 750,965 in 2000 to 991,348 in 2010, a 32 percent increase. The conference will show how economic and social indicators demonstrate that Latinos are living in difficult and challenging circumstances. Cost to register is $50. For information, call Ana M. Mayoral Candidates Forum
The East Village Association will sponsor a San Diego mayoral candidates forum on April 20 from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. at the Thomas Jefferson School of Law (Room 325), 1155 Island Ave., in Downtown. Candidates Carl DeMaio, Bonnie Dumanis, Bob Filner and Nathan Fletcher will be questioned by a panel on a number of issues impacting East Village, such as the Chargers stadium, the end of the redevelopment agency, homelessness, crimes, jobs, education and small business. Panelist will be Alex Kreit, director of the Center for Law & Social Justice at Thomas Jefferson School of Law; Jack Monger, board member of the East Village Association; Kris Mitchell, CEO of the Downtown Partnership; and moderator Dennis Morgigno of Cox Communications. San Diego — Tom Heffernan has been promoted to principal of the San Diego office of Gensler, a design and planning firm. Also promoted are Cladia Salazar to design director, Nathan Ouren to senior associate, Darrel Fullbright to associate, Debra Martinez to associate, Stacy Cannon to associate and Andy Vogt to Associate. Heffernan has more than 20 years of experience in the industry and joined Gensler in 2007.
Free Shredding Services
Free shredding services will be held April 7 at three San Diego County Credit Union offices between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. The locations are: 1600 South Escondido Blvd., Escondido; 286 Town Center Parkway, Santee; and 6545 Sequence Drive, Mira Mesa. The public can bring a maximum of two boxes of paper to be shredded on the spot. Boxes must be no larger than approximately 10-by-12-by-15 inches.
