NASSCO Starts Work on the Next Mobile Landing Platform Ship
NASSCO has begun construction of the future USNS John Glenn, the second ship of the U.S. Navy’s Mobile Landing Platform (MLP) program. The 765-foot long ship is scheduled to be delivered to the Navy in the first quarter of 2014. When in service, the ship will be used as an offshore staging area for Navy and U.S. Marine Corps personnel and equipment. NASSCO has construction contracts to build a total of three Mobile Landing Platform ships. The first ship of the class, the future USNS Montford Point, is currently 48 percent complete at the San Diego shipyard. Once delivered to the fleet, MLP ships will join the Maritime Prepositioning Force squadrons that are located around the world to enable rapid response in a crisis.
Governor Draws Bead on Kangaroo Harvest Report and Others
An annual report by the Australian government on its annual kangaroo harvest is one of more than 700 unnecessary bureaucratic reports required by law that Gov. Brown wants to eliminate. “It wastes a lot of time and money to write, track and file these reports,” said Brown in sending the list to the Legislature to remove. The state Department of Fish and Game is required by law to track the kangaroo harvest report. Other reports Brown wants to have eliminated: An annual report by the Department of Transportation on the use of waste tires; a monthly report on response and recovery activities tied to the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake; a biennial report by the Department of Boating and Waterways on the status of its operations.
Kyocera Communications Inc. Receives Recycling Award
San Diego-based Kyocera Communications Inc., a subsidiary of Kyocera International, has received the Director’s Recycling Award for environmental programs from the city of San Diego’s Environmental Services Department. It is the 12th consecutive year the city has honored the company for its recycling efforts. In honor of Earth Day, the company will hold an electronics collection drive on Friday with STAR 94.1 at the Westfield Mission Valley mall. San Diegans are encouraged to bring all old, obsolete or broken small personal electronics for donation. The drive is part of Kyocera’s citywide eWaste Recycling Program benefitting Cell Phones for Soldiers.
Miranda & Associates Merges With North County Tax & Accountancy
Miranda & Associates, a Newport Beach-based accounting and management consulting firm, has merged with North County Tax & Accountancy (NCT), a move that doubles its Southern California practice. The company said it would benefit from the addition of NCT’s principal, Bill Walters, and his service team of 11. NCT was founded in 2006.
Scripps Researcher Elected to American Academy of Arts & Sciences
Scripps Research Institute Professor Gerald F. Joyce has been elected to the American Academy of Arts & Sciences. In addition to Joyce, the 203 fellows and 17 foreign honorary members inducted this year include Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright and screenwriter Neil Simon, Melinda Gates of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, American film icons Clint Eastwood and Mel Brooks, composer Andre Previn, and Amazon founder Jeffrey Bezos. After earning a bachelor’s degree from the University of Chicago, Joyce received both an M.D. and Ph.D. from UC San Diego in 1984.
Conan O’Brien to Appear at Sixth College’s Anniversary Celebration
Late-night talk show host Conan O’Brien will be a guest of UC San Diego’s Sixth College on Friday as it celebrates its 10th anniversary. Sixth College welcomed its first incoming class of 285 students in 2002. Ten years later, Sixth College’s number of students has grown faster than any other college on campus. The anniversary celebration will include a number of events, including a special film screening, chocolate festival and student performances, among others.

San Diego — Eugene R. Long Jr. has joined Brown Law Group as a new associate. Long served as an assistant U.S. Attorney
in the area of civil litigation, primarily conducting employment defense litigation in response to claims brought by government employees. Before that he worked with King & Ballow, a national law firm, in La Jolla as a litigation associate. He also served as an associate with Carlton, DiSante and Freudenberger, a statewide labor and employment law firm located in San Diego.
San Diego — Former San Diego city planning director Bill Anderson is the new president-elect of the American Planning Association and will take office on May 29. He is currently APA’s national director for Region VI. Anderson will serve one year as president-elect before assuming the presidency for a two-year term starting in April 2013.
San Diego — Robert Chávez has been appointed chief executive officer of the Urban Corps of San Diego County, succeeding
retiring and founding CEO Sam Duran. Chávez has more than 16 years of experience leading community development projects and programs. Prior to accepting his new position with the Urban Corps, Chávez was community development coordinator for the city of San Diego’s Redevelopment Agency where he oversaw the implementation of the Mercado del Barrio Project in Barrio Logan, currently under construction, and Urban Corps’ Community Enhancement Program known as “Green Street” for Barrio Logan and San Ysidro residents. Chávez will take over on May 14. There will be a brief transition period until Duran retires in July.
