Nathan Fletcher Surges to 2nd Place in Mayoral Poll
City News Service — Assemblyman Nathan Fletcher, who recently left the Republican Party to become an independent, has surged to second place in a poll for the San Diego mayor’s race released Thursday by 10News. Fletcher, who had been languishing in a third place tie because of low name recognition — far below the top two — gained 26 percent of those questioned by the polling firm SurveyUSA. Whether Fletcher simply solved his visibility issues or was lauded by the public for his change of registration, the figure is double that of the previous sampling of voter sentiment. “It’s encouraging to see, but I’ve never lived my life by what one poll or the other said,” Fletcher said. He added that it appears to show the public doesn’t want a candidate from the far left or the far right, although he trails — by two points — Councilman Carl DeMaio, who consistently gained strong support from conservatives in earlier polls. DeMaio’s backing improved three percentage points since the last SurveyUSA poll, conducted two months ago. Survey USA asked one question — who do you support for mayor, followed by a listing of the candidates. Rep. Bob Filner, D-San Diego, maintained his 20 percent support, but that now leaves him in third place, according to SurveyUSA. The poll showed District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis in fourth with 13 percent — like Filner, about the same level of backing as she had previously. About 10 percent in the 10News poll were undecided, compared to about one-third of the electorate previously. If no one wins more than 50 percent in the June 5 primary, the top two vote-getters will compete in the November general election.
JMI Realty Partners Acquires The Inn at Rancho Santa Fe 
JMI Realty Partners, a hospitality investment company, has announced the acquisition of The Inn at Rancho Santa Fe from the Huntington Hotel Co. John Kratzer, chairman and CEO, made the announcement. “We are very pleased that the Royce family, who are such a part of the legacy of The Inn at Rancho Santa Fe, felt comfortable with us as the next steward of this beloved community asset,” said Kratzer. “Many of us live in Rancho Santa Fe and understand the importance of the Inn to the community and are committed to continue the Family’s legacy in that regard.” Kratzer said an extensive renovation of the rooms and spa will be accomplished at the end of summer. Rod Apodaca, Bob Kaplan and Jed Stirnkorb of CBRE represented the seller. Located in Rancho Santa Fe, the acreage is traversed with bridle trails and winding pathways, and the original Inn dates to 1924. “While JMI Realty is the general partner of the ownership group, we are pleased that The Inn is the first in a series of investments that will include Siguler Guff, a significant New York-based real estate investment firm,” said Greg Clay, chief investment officer of JMI Realty.
Qualcomm Leases Sorrento Mesa Building
Qualcomm Inc. has leased a 48,709-square-foot building at 10445 Pacific Center Court in Sorrento Mesa for a five-year, five-month term. Kilroy Realty Corp., the landlord, said the building previously was occupied by CareFusion. The new full-building lease with Qualcomm is expected to start in the third quarter of 2012 following the completion of tenant improvement work. The lease expands Kilroy Realty’s relationship with Qualcomm, which now leases over 116,000 square feet of space from the company in Sorrento Mesa, San Diego’s largest technology submarket.
Director Named for the Moores Cancer Center at UC San Diego
Scott M. Lippman, professor of cancer medicine and cancer prevention at the University of Texas Anderson Cancer Center, has accepted the position of director of the Moores Cancer Center at UC San Diego, effective May 1. Lippman currently holds the Charles A. LeMaistre Distinguished Chair in Thoracic Oncology. He graduated from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, did his internship and residency training at Johns Hopkins Hospital and Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, and had hematology/medical oncology training at Stanford University and the University of Arizona. Lippman has more than 25 years of experience as principal investigator of translational research involving investigator-initiated clinical trials.
