Rally to Support Women’s Rights to Contraception
A rally to support women’s rights to contraception will be held in front of the federal courthouse in Downtown San Diego on Thursday — International Women’s Day. The noon to 1 p.m. rally is co-sponsored by Women Occupy San Diego and Planned Parenthood. Keynote speaker is Jennifer Coburn, director of communications and marketing for Planned Parenthood of San Diego and Riverside Counties. Also taking part will be comedian Diane Jean and the Occupella Chorus of Women Occupy San Diego. The sponsors said the rally will address a number of recent attacks on a woman’s right to contraception and family planning.
High School Students to Get Taste of College
UC San Diego will again offer Academic Connections this summer, a residential immersion program that gives high school students a taste of the real college experience. Eligible students can participate in a non-stop program on the UC San Diego campus or in one of three research laboratories. This year, high school students have four options for an Academic Connections experience: three weeks on the UC San Diego campus; one week on the Big Island of Hawaii; one week at Biosphere 2 in Arizona; or one week at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico. SDSU Gets Grant for Research on Spread of Infectious Diseases
The W.M. Keck Foundation has awarded San Diego State University a $250,000 grant to study one of the effects of climate change — the spread of infectious diseases. The three-year grant will provide funding for an intensive summer program followed by a year-long research experience for undergraduates that will include hands-on training in field studies, molecular laboratory techniques and more. The interdisciplinary program will involve SDSU faculty from the fields of science, technology, engineering and math. Research will focus on the Tijuana River Estuary, a sensitive natural resource near the border between San Diego and Tijuana. Additional research will utilize data available about the recent outbreaks of infectious disease worldwide, such as the cholera outbreak in Haiti and the E. coli STEC outbreak in Germany. An initial group of 24 freshman and sophomore students, the Keck Scholars, will be recruited for the program beginning summer 2012.
Free Business Basics Workshops Offered
SCORE San Diego will offer its business basics workshop for free three days a week in response to the difficult job climate. The workshop is an overview of what people need to consider before starting a business and will be offered in Downtown San Diego, Kearny Mesa or Carlsbad in morning and afternoon sessions. SCORE San Diego is also participating in the nationwide initiative to assist veterans find civilian jobs by expanding its Military Transition Program. Workshops are free for active duty military who are within one year of retirement, and now, workshops will be free for veterans for up to one year after they retire from the military. Old Town Restaurant Sold
Siam Smile Land Inc. has purchased Cefalu’s Restaurant in Old Town, a 2,600-square-foot eatery at 2414 San Diego Ave. The seller was Tonena Inc. Mike DiNorscia of Location Matters Restaurant & Retail Brokerage represented the seller in the transaction and the buyer was represented by Sam Khodor of Premier Mortgage & Real Estate.
Fundraiser for S.D. Advertising Fund for Emergencies
The San Diego Advertising Fund for Emergencies (SAFE), a volunteer, non-profit organization that provides financial assistance to advertising and marketing professionals facing a life crisis emergency, will present its 11th annual fundraising party from 6 to 10 p.m. on March 22 at Andaz San Diego, formerly the Ivy Hotel, at 600 F St., in the Gaslamp Quarter in Downtown. The event is open to the public.

San Diego — Chaim Heller, head of the Brandeis Hillel Day School in San Francisco, has been named executive director of the San Diego Jewish Academy, replacing Larry Acheatel, who will retire in July after 12 years in the position. Heller is finishing his 17th year at the San Francisco school.
San Diego — Carlsbad Fire Chief Kevin Crawford has been appointed chairman of the Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas Community Advisory Board. Crawford has been the fire chief of Carlsbad since 2002.
San Diego — Tiffany English, director of interior architecture and design for Ware Malcomb, has been elected president of Commercial Real Estate Women (CREW) San Diego. English has been a member of CREW Network for over seven years, initially joining the Sacramento chapter. She joined the San Diego chapter after relocating in 2006.
