Gubernatorial Appointments
• Lisa Barkett, 52, of La Jolla, has been appointed to the Race Track Leasing Commission as a representative of the 22nd District Agricultural Association, San Diego Fair Board, by Gov. Brown She has been vice president of Merjan Financial Corp. since 1989. Barkett earned a Juris Doctorate degree from Pepperdine University School of Law. This position does not require Senate confirmation and there is no compensation. Barkett is a Democrat.
• John Farrell, 71, of Chula Vista, has been reappointed to the California Veterans Board, where he has been a member since 2011. He is currently a resident of the Veterans Home of California, Chula Vista. Farrell was a private practice attorney from 1973 to 2004. He was a partner at Exarhos and Farrell from 1975 to 1983 and an associate attorney at Milch Wolfsheimer and Wagner from 1974 to 1975. The position requires Senate confirmation and compensation is $100 per diem. Farrell is a Democrat.
• David Watson, 54, of Chula Vista, has been appointed to the Race Track Leasing Commission as a representative of the 22nd District Agricultural Association, San Diego Fair Board. He has been a partner at Duane Morris LLP since 2010. Watson was a partner at Hecht Solberg Robinson Goldberg and Bagley from 2008 to 2010 and from 2002 to 2006. He was vice president of Yokohl Ranch Co. LLC from 2006 to 2008 and he was an attorney at Gray Cary Ware and Freidenrich from 1988 to 2002. He earned a Juris Doctorate degree from William and Mary Law School. Watson is a Democrat.
Cubic Receives Contract for Combat Training System
Cubic Defense Applications Inc. has received a new contract valued at more than $11 million to provide the P5 Tactical Combat Training System to the Royal Australian Air Force for use in training F/A-18F Super Hornet crews. Cubic and its principal subcontractor, DRS Training and Control Systems, will provide the system. The system for the Super Hornet will be delivered in late 2012 to RAAF Base Amberley near Brisbane, Queensland. Amberley was previously home to the RAAF’s F-111 aircraft, which were recently retired from service and were replaced with two squadrons of F/A-18F Super Hornets.
Scripps Mercy Hospital 2nd Phase Addition Completed
McCarthy Building Cos. Inc., has completed construction of the 13,500-square-foot addition to the emergency department and trauma center at Scripps Mercy Hospital at 4077 Fifth Ave. in Hillcrest. Scripps Health officials recently dedicated the expanded facility, renaming it the “Conrad Prebys Emergency & Trauma Center” in honor of its largest donor. Representing the second phase of a four-phased, $41.3 million expansion and remodeling project, the new addition doubles the size of the existing emergency department and trauma center to encompass a combined 27,000 square feet of space. The phase two, 13,500-square-foot addition was performed by McCarthy on an18,500-square-foot site on the east side of Fifth Avenue, immediately adjacent to Scripps Mercy Hospital San Diego’s existing emergency department. Construction of the single-level structure utilizes drilled-pier foundation systems, with structural-steel building superstructure and plaster-on-metal stud-framed exteriors. When fully complete, the Conrad Prebys Emergency & Trauma Center will accommodate 49 beds — double the number of beds previously available. Four trauma bays will double the patient capacity of its current trauma center, accommodating up to eight people. A department-dedicated CT scanner adjacent to the trauma room bays eliminate the need to transport patients to the hospital’s radiology department.
