State of the Inner City Address Precedes Mayor’s Speech

Before Mayor Jerry Sanders delivers his final “State of the City” address Wednesday night, two candidates vying to replace him will give a “State of the Inner City” address at 3 p.m. at the headquarters of Reality Changers, 3910 University Ave. Assemblyman Nathan Fletcher and Councilman Carl DeMaio will talk about solutions to current issues facing inner city residents.

Christopher Yanov, founder and president of Reality Changers, said the event also will include an announcement that it will be offering its services to 10 schools in the coming months and doubling the number of students served by the program before the end of the year — from 250 to 500. Yanov said San Diego Unified School District Superintendent Bill Kowba and Board President Richard Barrera will be present and will address the positive impact that Reality Changers’ announcement will have on the inner-city youth at local high schools.

Reality Changers began in 2001 with a $300 budget and the desire to build first-generation college students. Today, members of Reality Changers have earned over $13 million  in scholarships, according to Yanov.

Sanders, who will be termed out after 2012, will give his State of the City address at 6 p.m. at the Balboa Theatre Downtown. Among the topics he is expected to discuss is his plan to give 401(k) retirement plans, instead of putting them in the debt-ridden city pension system.

The speech could also reveal plans to deal with a projected $73 million shortfall for the 2011-12 budget. The State of the City address will air on City TV at 8 p.m.
