METRO Movers to Watch

Mark Cafferty to Head Economic Development Corp.
Mark Cafferty, 40, the president and CEO of the San Diego Workforce Partnership since 2008, has been named the new president and CEO of the San Diego Regional Economic Development Corp., the Downtown-based organization that promotes business and economic development in the region. Cafferty, a Point Loma resident, will assume the post on Feb. 1. The position has been held on an interim basis by Bill Geppert, who took over following the retirement of Julie Meier Wright in June. “Mark is the right leader to take this organization to the next level in a fast-changing world,” said Debra Reed, chair of the EDC board.
Cafferty will head an organization with a current fiscal year budget of $3 million and 13 employees.
The Boston native joined the Workforce Partnership in 2001 and became its president and CEO in July 2008. He is credited with increasing the organization’s budget by more than 30 percent, managing a one-time award of $25 million from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and obtaining more competitive grants than at any time in the past six years.
“I am really looking forward to this opportunity to apply so much of what I have learned to a more dynamic, entrepreneurial environment,” said Cafferty. “I see this as a chance to have an even broader impact on the region, move at greater speed to launch new initiatives, and build on what my predecessors – Julie Meier Wright and Bill Geppert – have put in place.”
Cafferty was the deputy director of the Boston Private Industry Council before moving to San Diego in 2001. He holds a bachelor’s degree in marketing and communication from Assumption College in Worcester, Mass.
Convention Management Association to Hold Jan. 8-11 Parley
Thousands of convention and meeting industry professionals will gather at the San Diego Convention Center Jan. 8-11 for the annual convention of the Professional Convention Management Association. As many as 4,000 attendees may come to the event, according to the PCMA. According to PCMA, cities that host the meeting have the potential to generate hundreds of millions of dollars in future business. As the host city, San Diego can also expect an immediate return of $11.8 million in economic impact, $167,300 in tax revenues and 10,500 hotel room nights, based upon PCMA’s initial attendance estimates, it said.
Chula Vista Dentists Receives Humanitarian Award
Terry T. Tanaka, a practicing dentist in Chula Vista, has been awarded the 2011 California Dental Association Foundation Humanitarian Award for his dedication to providing dental care to underserved populations for more than three decades. Tanaka’s humanitarian contributions date back to 1979 when he began his work with field surgical clinics in Mexicali, La Paz and Guaymas. Tanaka was the driving force behind organizing teams that traveled to Mexico to treat cleft lip and cleft palate children. With active fundraising, Tanaka and his Rotarian group established the Thousand Smiles Foundation and created a permanent, two-story clinic in Ensenada. The clinic is used for restorative, prosthetic and orthodontic dental treatment, as well as speech therapy and hearing testing.

Community College District Names Vice Chancellor
The San Diego Community College District has named William Surbrook as its new vice chancellor of human resources. Surbrook’s contract is expected to be ratified at the Jan. 26 meeting the the district’s board of trustees. Since 2009, Surbrook has been director of employee relations for the district. Before that, he worked in the San Diego Unified School District in a variety of positions, including director of labor relations. He also served as personnel commissioner for the San Diego Office of Education. Surbrook is a graduate of National University and holdds a bachelor’s degree in management and human resources and is pursuing a master’s degree.
Marcus & Millichap Hires Investment Specialist
Marcus & Millichap Real Estate Investment Services has hired Matthew LoPiccolo as an investment specialist in the sale of retail properties in San Diego County. Previously, LoPiccolo worked in the same capacity at Capital Real Estate in San Diego. LoPiccolo holds a degree from Michigan State University and worked as a project manager for his family’s residential development company. In 2007, he was hired as an investment specialist at Capital Real Estate where he brokered the sale of retail assets. Before leaving, he was the firm’s top-producing agent.
Sullivan Hill Law Firm Adds Associate Attorney
Kathryn A. Millerick has joined the San Diego law office of Sullivan Hill as an associate. Millerick concentrates her practice in the firm’s insolvency and commercial bankruptcy practice group. Millerick received her law degree from the UC Davis School of Law in 2011, where she was a board member of the American Constitution Society and an editor for the Journal of Juvenile Law & Policy. She graduated UC Berkeley in 2007, where she obtained two bachelor’s degrees in legal studies and mass communications. Before she graduated from law school Millerick served as a law extern for Judge Laura S. Taylor at the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of California during the summer of 2009.
‘An Evening With Alfie Kohn’ Set for Jan. 12
Alfie Kohn, a Boston-based expert on education, human behavior and parenting and the author of 12 books, will be featured at “An Evening with Alfie Kohn” on Jan. 12 in a program hosted by USD’s School of Leadership and Education Sciences, The Grauer School in Encinitas and The Children’s School in La Jolla. It will be at 7 p.m. at the Shiley Theatre on the USD campus. In his lecture, “The Schools Our Children Deserve,” Kohn challenges traditional educational norms, including fierce competition, reward incentives, standardized testing, excessive homework, and grading systems. He will share research-based alternatives to these practices and discuss models of education designed to develop children’s critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
