Downtown Partnership to Present Alonzo Awards
The Downtown San Diego Partnership will hold its 49th annual Alonzo Awards Wednesday at the Omni San Diego Hotel — a tribute to people projects and programs that have contributed to the revitalization of Downtown. The 2011 Alonzo Awardees, with comments from the Downtown San Diego Partnership:
Chairman’s Award – Mayor Jerry Sanders
“Mayor Jerry Sanders has been a true leader, visionary and advocate for Downtown San Diego. The mayor has been a champion for the continued redevelopment of Downtown, and the leader on several projects including the new central library, civic center and the San Diego Convention Center.
Founders Award – Fred Maas, founder and CEO of Pacific EcoCompanies LLC
“Fred Maas served as the interim CEO of the Centre City Development Corporation from 2009-2010, during which time he downsized and re-engineered staff functions, sent $60 million into the general fund, and did more for affordable housing and homeless than at any other time in CCDC’s history.
Vic Kops Humanitarian Award – County of San Diego
“County Supervisors Ron Roberts and Greg Cox followed up participation in the Downtown Partnership’s 2010 Registry Week with supportive case managers and services. Supervisors Cox and Roberts will be coordinating with the Downtown Partnership’s Clean and Safe homeless outreach coordinators to continue working toward ending homeless in downtown San Diego.”
President’s Award – Irvine Company and EvoNexus
“EvoNexus, a technology incubator successfully implemented in UTC, will stimulate the 2012 growth of new high technology companies in Downtown. The Irvine Company has committed over 15,000 square feet of office space that will include tenant improvements, totaling more than $750,000 in value.”
Sustainable Business Practices Award – San Diego County Regional Airport Authority
“The San Diego County Regional Airport Authority is at the forefront of the aviation industry in sustainability. The Airport Authority is in the midst of the largest improvement project in the airport’s 80-year history – The Green Build – named in part for its environmental leadership. “
This year, the Downtown San Diego Partnership honors three efforts with Alonzo Awards:
USS Midway Museum: “More than 6 million visitors (including conventioneers) have come aboard Midway since opening in 2004, making it the most-visited floating naval museum in the world. The Midway is a valuable marketing resource for the city of San Diego and has made a profound economic impact in excess of $25 million annually since opening.”
Thomas Jefferson School of Law: “The new building is designed to integrate cutting-edge learning technology and sustainability with a collaborative environment to facilitate optimal academic achievement and student success.”
North Embarcadero Visionary Plan: “The North Embarcadero Visionary Plan will provide significant and free public open space at the foot of Broadway including a 105 foot wide waterfront promenade, formal gardens, running and bicycle paths, new public restrooms and other public plazas.”
‘Walk a Mile in Her Shoes’ Raises $70,000
The Oct. 20 “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” event raised $70,000 and attracted 400 walkers and 110 volunteers in its efforts to support YWCA’s Becky’s House Domestic Violence Program. (Men and women put on a pair of high-heeled shoes and walked through the streets of Downtown.) The Becky’s House program includes a 30-60 day domestic violence emergency shelter, a 24-hour emergency hotline,and two 18-24 month transitional housing communities for survivors of domestic violence and their families. Becky’s House serves more than 3,000 women and children each year, including answering nearly 2,500 hotline calls.
Employees Organization Solicits Funding Applications
The San Diego County Employees Charitable Organization is soliciting grant funding applications for 2012. It said about $200,000 will be available to assist San Diego County nonprofit organizations. The application period runs through Dec. 2. In 2011, the organization distributed $217,097 to support 89 nonprofit programs around the county. First 5 Commission Names New Executive Director
The First 5 Commission of San Diego, which promotes the health and well being of children during the first five years of their lives, has selected Kimberly Medeiros as its new executive director. Medeiros has worked for the county since 1999 in various roles, most recently as the deputy director of theDepartment of Human Resources.Prior to her position in human resources, Medeiros served in several capacities in the County Health and Human Services Agency where she worked for 10 years. First 5 San Diego programs and services are funded through San Diego County’s portion of the state’s Proposition 10 tax revenues. Medeiros replaces Barbara Jiménez, who now serves HHSA as deputy director of the north regions.
Procopio Law Firm Selects Human Resources Director
Lauren I. Symington has joined the law firm of Procopio, Cory, Hargreaves & Savitch LLP as the director of human resources and administration. Prior to joining Procopio, Symington was the human resources manager for Paul Hastings LLP. Symington earned her bachelor’s degree from San Diego State University and her law degree from California Western School of Law. She was admitted to the California Bar in 2004 and is a member of the State Bar of California. Symington also serves on the board of directors for San Diego’s Deaf Community Services.
Newest Supply Ship is Christened
NASSCO, a subsidiary of General Dynamics, christened the U.S. Navy’s newest supply ship, USNS Medgar Evers, on Saturday. Named in honor of the African-American civil rights leader from Mississippi, the Medgar Evers is the 13th ship of a class of 14 dry cargo/ammunition ships designed and built by NASSCO. More than 1,000 people attended the Saturday morning christening ceremony. Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus was the principal speaker. Myrlie Evers, the widow of the late Medgar Evers, served as the ship’s sponsor. As the first field secretary of the NAACP in Mississippi, Medgar Evers (July 2, 1925 – June 12, 1963) created and organized voter-registration efforts, peaceful demonstrations and economic boycotts to draw attention to the unjust practices of companies that practiced discrimination. Evers became one of the most visible civil rights leaders in the state of Mississippi, working closely with church leaders and other civil rights advocates to promote understanding and equality.
“Each ship in the T-AKE Class is named for a noted pioneer in our nation’s history. Mr. Evers was an Army veteran of World War II and an important civil rights pioneer,” said Fred Harris, president of NASSCO. Following its at-sea testing phase, the ship will be delivered to the Navy in the second quarter of 2012.
