Eastman Named President-Elect of American College of Surgeons
Dr. A Brent Eastman, chief medical officer of Scripps Health, has been named president-elect of the American College of Surgeons (ACS). Eastman, a general, vascular and trauma surgeon, is the N. Paul Whittier chair of trauma at Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla. He is one of the co-founders of San Diego County’s trauma system.
Eastman began serving on the ACS board of regents in 2001. He participated in the ACS and American Association for the Surgery of Trauma Distinguished Visiting Surgeon in Combat Casualty Program at the United States military hospital Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Landstuhl, Germany in July 2007. Eastman’s wife, Sarita, a graduate of the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine, is a pediatrician and author. Her recently published biography, “A Trail of Light: The Very Full Life of Dr. Anita Figueredo,” chronicles her mother’s journey from Costa Rica to the U.S. where she pursued her dream in medicine and eventually became the first woman surgeon in San Diego. Sarita Eastman, Figueredo and her husband, Dr. William Doyle, all practiced medicine at Scripps. Doyle also served as chief of staff at Scripps La Jolla in 1964.
Promises2Kids Names New CEO
Tonya Torosian, a veteran in child welfare and nonprofit management, has been named chief executive officer of Promises2Kids, the San Diego organization that battles child abuse. Torosian, a resident of North Park, previously spent three years as the executive director of the San Diego County Commission on Children, Youth and Families where she led the commission to advise the Board of Supervisors on policies affecting the welfare of children in foster care or children involved with the juvenile justice system.Torosian’s work in child welfare and nonprofit management spans 20 years and three states. She developed programs and policies for child and youth-based organizations in Illinois, Arizona and California. She began her career first as a social worker, then as an executive charged with developing strategic alliances and implementing processes, systems and policies. Torosian was with Promises2Kids as director of development from 2005 to 2008 when the organization was known as the Child Abuse Prevention Foundation. She receive a master’s degree from Arizona State University.
Susie Friedman and Lora Fisher Join Union Bank
Susie H. Friedman has joined Union Bank as a business client adviser in the business banking group and Lora Fisher has joined the bank’s consumer lending group as a mortgage consultant serving the Golden Triangle branch in La Jolla. Friedman previously worked as a commercial loan officer for Sunrise Bank of San Diego, and was a loan officer and underwriter for Chinatrust Bank. She also held positions at Bank of America and J.P. Mortan Chase Bank. She holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of California at Santa Barbara. Fisher has more than 20 years of experience in the industry. She previously was a relationship manager and team leader for Northern Trust in La Jolla, and was a senior private banker for Wells Fargo Private Bank in Pebble Beach.
Surfrider Foundation Adds Staff
The San Diego chapter of the Surfrider Foundation has added to new staff positions. Haley Haggerstone, a longtime Surfrider activist and executive committee member of the organization’s Vancouver chapter, was named chapter coordinator. Julia Chunn-Heer, former general manager of Surfrider Australia, was named campaign coordinator. Haggerstone holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of British Columbia and is working towards a master’s degree at University of San Diego. Chunn-Heer worked in Australia on several campaigns, helping local activists win several victories for their coastlines. She previously served as the chair of the San Diego Surfrider chapter, and worked on the staff at Coast Law Group in Encinitas.
