San Diego County Employment
• Employment down 3,600 jobs over the month
• Up 17,300 jobs over the year
The unemployment rate in the San Diego County was 9.7 percent in September, down from a revised 10.2 percent in August and below the year-ago estimate of 10.5 percent, according to the state Employment Development Department. California’s unadjusted employment rate for September was 11.4 percent and the nation’s jobless rate was 8.8 percent.
Between August 2011 and September 2011:
Total nonfarm employment declined from 1,239,400 to 1,235,800, a loss of 3,600 jobs. Agricultural employment gained 300 jobs, or 3.0 percent.
• Leisure and hospitality reported the greatest month-over decline, down 6,500. Arts, entertainment, and recreation contracted by 3,400 jobs, while accommodation and food services receded by 3,100 jobs.
• Construction decreased by 1,400 jobs. Specialty trade contractors (down 1,000) accounted for more than 70 percent of the job losses in this sector. Heavy and civil engineering construction dipped by 300 jobs and construction of buildings dropped by 100 jobs.
• Government posted the greatest month-over gain, adding 4,300 jobs. Local government (up 3,000) accounted for roughly 70 percent of the job growth in this sector, primarily from local government education. State government added 1,200 jobs, while federal government increased by 100 jobs.
Between September 2010 and September 2011:
Total nonfarm employment gained 17,300 jobs, or 1.4 percent. Agricultural employment reported no change in employment levels over the year.
• Leisure and hospitality recorded the greatest year-over gain, adding 5,400 jobs. Accommodation and food services increased by 6,300 jobs. Arts, entertainment, and recreation declined by 900 jobs offsetting the overall job growth in this sector.
• Four other industry sectors also reported employment growth over the year: Professional and business services (up 5,200); educational and health services (up 4,200); trade, transportation, and utilities (up 4,100); and financial activities (up 1,500).
• Construction posted the greatest year-over decline, down 1,500 jobs. Specialty trade contractors (down 1,500) accounted for all the job losses in this sector.
