Governor Pushes Jobs Plan in San Diego

Gov. Brown today will join San Diego business leaders at Gen-Probe Inc. to call on the state Legislature to pass his California Jobs First plan, which eliminates a “toxic tax loophole” and offers over $1 billion a year in tax relief for businesses that create jobs in the state.

“My plan eliminates a toxic tax loophole that undermines job growth in California and gives manufacturers and small businesses incentives to invest and hire in California,” Brown said. Brown’s plan, unveiled last month, provides small businesses with up to 50 employees a $4,000 tax credit for each new in-state hire and offers companies a tax exemption for purchases of new manufacturing equipment.

The governor will discuss his plan today at Gen-Probe, a bio-technology firm, headquartered in San Diego that develops, manufactures and markets products to screen blood supplies. The company was founded in 1983 and employs more than 900.

“Gov. Brown’s jobs plan is a practical, common-sense approach to encourage the private sector to hire and manufacture in California, and to support the growth of small businesses,” said Carl Hull, president and CEO of Gen-Probe.

World Trade Center to Hold Commemorative Event

World Trade Center San Diego, a member of the World Trade Centers Association that suffered the terrorist attacks at its headquarters in New York City on Sept. 11, 2001, will host a free commemorative event on Sept. 8 with the theme of “Peace, Prosperity and Diversity through Trade.” The free public event will be held from 2 to 7 p.m. at the Port Pavilion on Broadway Pier with exhibits by more than 80 local companies involved in global trade; a commemoration walk at 4 p.m. from the County Administration Building to the Pavilion; a special program at 4:30 p.m. that includes a moment of silence; the national anthem; and remarks by County Supervisor Ron Roberts, San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders and other local dignitaries.  The program will conclude with a free concert by Jefferson Starship from 5:30 to 7 p.m. “This is an opportunity for San Diegans to honor those who died in the attacks, as well as the survivors, first responders and the many unsung heroes of 9/11,” said Sanders. The free event is being produced in partnership with the Port of San Diego.

Bella Heule, president and CEO of the World Trade Center in San Diego, said the 10th anniversary of the attack on the World Trade Center buildings in New York City holds particular significance for World Trade Centers worldwide. “We want to recognize the people who lost their lives, and renew and affirm our belief that international trade can bring peace and prosperity,” said Heule.

USS Spruance to be Commissioned Oct. 1

USS Spruance

The newest Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer, the future USS Spruance, sailed away from the Bath Iron Works shipyard in Bath, Maine Sept. 1 on its maiden voyage to her commissioning site in Key West, Fla. before heading to her eventual homeport of San Diego. Prior to reaching this milestone, Spruance finished combined “super trials” March 18 in the Gulf of Maine. Bath Iron Works and the U.S. Navy’s Board of Inspection and Survey tested the ship and its systems to prove its operational readiness. The Navy accepted delivery of Spruance Apr. 15, representing the official transfer from the shipbuilder to the Navy and a major milestone in Spruance’s transition to operational status. The commissioning of USS Spruance is scheduled for Oct. 1. The ship is named for Adm. Raymond Spruance, who led U.S. Navy forces in the Battle of Midway and the Battle of the Philippine Sea in World War II. Previously, Spruance’s name was on the lead ship of the former Spruance class of destroyers.
