Starlight Theatre Files for Chapter 11
The San Diego Civic Light Opera Association — Starlight Theatre — has suspended its 65th season after filing for legal reorganization under Chapter 11 bankruptcy law. “Although this was an extremely difficult decision for Starlight, filing for reorganization is an important first step toward securing a financially sound and sustainable future for a beloved San Diego treasure,” said John Redman, Starlight adviser and president of the Horton Plaza Theatre Foundation. “It is our expectation to rapidly emerge from reorganization to once more offer the best of American musical theater to family audiences.” Starlight Theatre began in 1946 at the Starlight Bowl in Balboa Park. In recent years, poor economic conditions have crippled the organization’s financial resources and hampered its ability to attract sponsors and grants.
Since its inception, Starlight has presented 64 seasons of musical theater productions for more than 4 million San Diegans and visitors. These seasons have encompassed nearly 1200 productions of 136 different musicals, ranging from the operettas of Gilbert & Sullivan and Jacques Offenback, the Rodgers & Hammerstein classics “Carousel” and “South Pacific,” favorites of the ’50s and ’60s such as “West Side Story,” “Guys & Dolls” and “Peter Pan” and the contemporary Broadway blockbusters as “A Chorus Line,” “Dreamgirls,” “Follies” and “Phantom of the Opera.”
Public Can Weigh In on Seaport Village Remake
The Port of San Diego will hold a public workshop on Aug. 18 to inform the community and seek its input on proposed plans for Seaport Village. It will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. in the board room of the Port of San Diego Administration Building, 3165 Pacific Highway. It will be the third public workshop seeking input on ongoing planning efforts for the Seaport Village property. Information collected will be incorporated into a study for the potential redevelopment of the property. The study is to be presented to the Board of Port Commissioners in early fall. Officials said the redevelopment may also incorporate adjacent property such as the Harbor Seafood Mart, the old police headquarters, Tuna Harbor and Embarcadero Marina Park North. Seaport Village is operated under a port lease by Terramar Retail Centers. In November 2010, port commissioners approved a process that called for it to work with the port and a consultant to develop design parameters for the redevelopment of Seaport Village.
