Century Club to Donate $1.36 Million to Charities
The Century Club of San Diego, host of the PGA Tour’s Farmers Insurance Open, is to announce the contribution of $1.36 million to nearly 200 San Diego area charities at a noon luncheon today at the Town & Country Resort and Convention Center. Recipients from the 2011 tournament at Torrey Pines included 91 high schools that participated in the Century Club’s annual Support our Schools program, which allows local high schools and middle schools to sell specially discounted any-day tickets for $17 to the annual Farmers Insurance Open and keep $15 of their sales. The top-selling schools to be honored include: Cathedral Catholic, $66,453; Rancho Bernardo High School, $28,645; La Costa Canyon High School, $21,658; Mater Dei Catholic High School, $17,000; and Mt Carmel High School, $16,524.Tthe Century Club also will present checks totaling $100,000 to several military charities, including Wounded Warrior Project, Naval Special Warfare Foundation, and Semper Fi Fund.
New CEO Selected for Father Joe’s Villages
Sister Patricia A. Cruise has been appointed as the new president and chief executive officer of Father Joe’s Villages and its partner agencies St. Vincent de Paul Village and Toussaint Youth Villages in San Diego and Martha;s Village & Kitchen in Indio. Cruise most recently served as president of Seton High School in Cincinnati and also served as executive vice president and CEO at Red Cloud Indian School in South Dakota and director of campus ministry/student activities at the College of Mount St. Joseph. She has more than 25 years of experience in education and academic administration. She succeeds Father Joe Carroll, who retired in April to serve as president emeritus of the organization.
Community College District Selected for Global Program
The Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District is one of eight colleges and universities across the nation — and the only community college district — selected for an American Council on Education project to promote internationalization, diversity and multicultural education. The three-year project, “At Home in the World: Educating for Global Connections and Local Commitments,” is funded by the Henry Luce Foundation. The eight campuses were selected from among 54 applicants to explore ways to better prepare students for the impacts of globalization and to improve cultural communication skills among students, faculty and staff. Leaders from the district’s two colleges, Grossmont College in El Cajon and Cuyamaca College in Rancho San Diego, will meet with ACE staff and representatives of the other institutions at an opening conference Aug. 29 and 30 in Washington, D.C., to share programs and best practices. Regular consultations with ACE experts will follow.
Old Globe Selects Matt McGrath for ‘Rocky Horror Show’
Old Globe Executive Producer Lou Spisto announced that Matt McGrath will appear in the role of Frank ‘N’ Furter in The Old Globe’s production of Richard O’Brien’s “The Rocky Horror Show,” which opens Sept. 23. McGrath appeared on Broadway as the emcee in Sam Mendes’ hit revival of “Cabaret” and in the international tour of Tom Waits and William S. Burroughs’ “The Black Rider: The Casting of the Magic Bullets” directed by Robert Wilson. He has also appeared Off Broadway in “Hedwig and the Angry Itch” and “A Fair Country at Lincoln Center Theater.” McGrath replaces the previously announced James Barbour, who has departed the production after the disclosure that in 2001 hewas accused of seducing a girl who visited him backstage after a performance of “Jane Eyre” on Broadway. He pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor counts of endangering the welfare of a child in 2008, and in exchange, prosecutors dropped felony charges against the actor.
San Diego Receivers Forum Panel
The San Diego Receivers Forum will present a luncheon and panel on “The Nuts & Bolts of Business & Equity Receiverships” on Sept. 14 at 11:30 a.m. at Sheraton La Jolla Hotel, 3299 Holiday Court, La Jolla. The panel includes San Diego Superior Court Judge Eddie Sturgeon; Thomas Hebrank, principal, E3 Advisors; Richard Kipperman, president, Corporate Management Inc.; and Bryan Sampson, principal, Sampson & Associates. The discussion will explain the key difference between a “rents-and-profits receiver” who generally takes possession of a real estate asset and an “equity receiver” who typically takes takes full control of the actual legal business entity or an ownership position of the company. Barona Powwow to be Staged Sept. 2-4
Billed as the county’s largest celebration of Native American tradition and culture, the 41st annual Barona Powwow will be staged Sept. 2-4 at the Barona Baseball Field near the Barona Resort & Casino in Lakeside. Since its inception in 1970, the tribal celebration has grown into a three-day event drawing over 10,000 Native Americans and visitors from across the nation and featuring more than 200 dancers competing for $60,000 in cash prizes. Throughout the Labor Day weekend celebration, the Powwow will showcase traditional Tribal dances from dancers of all ages, singing and music, a hand drum contest and handcrafted arts and jewelry. Visitors will also have the opportunity to taste a variety of authentic Native American cuisine. The Barona Cultural Center & Museum has extended its 40th anniversary Powwow exhibition for its final year. The Barona Band of Mission Indians invites all to visit the museum exhibit to learn about the event’s history and traditions.
